Mr. Smithers Will Finally Come Out On Next Week's "The Simpsons" Episode

It's about time!

The Simpsons producers announced a moment 27 years in the making last September, and now, it appears that moment is finally going to happen in the next two weeks.

A description posted online by Fox for the long-running series' April 3 episode reveals Mr. Waylon Smithers, trusty assistant to the villainous Mr. Burns, will finally come out as gay. Though the show has alluded to his sexuality in the past, Smithers has never officially come out of the closet.

"When Smithers is devastated by Burns’ lack of affection towards him, Homer makes it his mission to find him a boyfriend," the description reads. It also says George Takei will make a voice appearance as himself.

Other sources have claimed Smithers will take up using an online dating app to find a new boyfriend. Perhaps it'll be Grindr, seeing as Smithers already has it on his phone —

The upcoming two-episode arc was first described by executive producer Al Jean in September.

"In Springfield now, most people know he's [Smithers] gay, but obviously Burns doesn't," he said. "We deal with that in two episodes. … We actually do a lot with Smithers this year; he gets fed up with Burns not appreciating him and considers his options."

The Simpsons airs Sundays at 8/7c on Fox.
