“Moonlight,” “This Is Us” Go Head-To-Head In Revamped MTV Movie & TV Awards

Adam Devine hosts the re-imagined show, airing May 7 on MTV.

MTV is shaking things up this year, as the network rolled out the nominees for the revamped 2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards. For the first time, performances from the small screen and big screen will go head-to-head,

Pitch Perfect’s Adam Devine hosts the show, airing Sunday, May 7, at 8/7c on MTV.

“I’m so excited—I have dreamed about it since I was a teenager,” says the actor, who will next be seen in Magic Camp. “It was usually a dry dream, but I would be remiss if I didn’t admit that sometimes it was wet.”

The platform-agnostic categories see Moonlight up against This Is Us for “best tearjerker,” along with Game of Thrones, Me Before You and Grey’s Anatomy. “Best Fight” has been re-envisioned as “Best Fight Against the System,” and nominees include Get Out, Hidden Figures, and Loving, as well as Netflix’s Luke Cage and USA’s Mr. Robot.

The show is also doing away with separate categories for male and female performers.

“This audience actually doesn’t see male-female dividing lines, so we said, ‘Let’s take that down,’ MTV president Chris McCarthy, who also manages Logo, told Vulture.”And they don’t really care whether it’s scripted, reality or a theatrical release. They just want to celebrate great content.”

Of note to queer viewers, RuPaul’s Drag Race is up for “Best Reality Competition”, and RuPaul has been nominated for “Best Host.”

The smooch between Ashton Sanders and Jharrel Jerome also scored a nomination for “Best Kiss.”
