Murder Of 22-Year-Old Trans Woman Kiesha Jenkins Sparks Outrage In Philadelphia

#SayHerName

Philaldelphia's LGBT community has been rocked by the murder of a young trans woman early Tuesday morning.

At around 2am yesterday Kiesha Jenkins, 22, was dropped off at the corner of 13th and Wingohocking Streets in North Philly's Hunting Park neighborhood.

Almost immediately she was attacked by a group of a half-dozen men, reported police. After being knocked to the ground, Jenkins was shot twice in the back and was pronounced dead at Einstein Hospital at 2:53 am.

Police say there is no motive or suspects, and its not clear if her gender identity was a factor in the attack.

While Philadelphia has one of the most vibrant LGBT communities in the country, there have been several violent incidents of late: In September 2014, a gay couple was violently attacked by a mob of at least 10 people, who punched and kicked them in the face, head and chest as they yelled anti-gay slurs.

Jenkins' murder has reignited the #SayHerName hashtag campaign.
