Music Monday: 5 Songs You Need to Hear Today

A few new tracks just in time for your New Year’s Eve playlist.

NewNowNext spotlights new music by upcoming and established artists we think you should know about. Tell us what you think in the comment section.

Janelle Monáe – "Crazy, Classic, Life"

If you haven’t caught the video for the latest single from Dirty Computer, just stop whatever you’re doing right now for the best 6 minutes of the month. This is like a Black Panther meets Mad Max queer utopia, packing in a lifetime of emotions speaking to representation, visibility, and equality. We all deserve to have this much fun.

Dorian Electra – “Man to Man”

Dorian Electra parodies male aggression in this really smart electro-pop track, taking on hyper-masculine tropes of the past. With oscillating vocal pitch tricks and the visually captivating subversion of gender norms, toxic masculinity has officially left the chat.

Aja – "Jekyll and Hyde" (feat. Shilow)

I still watch Aja’s talent show clip from RuPaul's Drag Race All-Stars Season 3 for motivation, pretty much on a weekly basis. Aja spits fire, and "Jekyll and Hyde" is another reason why her music stands out as some of the most unexpected from the Drag Race girls. Brooklyn, we go hard.

Christinna O – “Shelter”

A rare queer voice in R&B, Christinna O found her way to music and poetry while being homeschooled to avoid bullying in her early teens. “Shelter” is her first commercial single, exploring the emotions of an imbalanced relationship. Her EP, Girl in Passing, is slated for release in early 2019, and she’s definitely one to watch.

Yanni Burton – “Awake”

“Awake” is a beautiful combination of heartfelt pop and brooding classical music, inspired by Yanni’s experience of finding new passion after a stagnant relationship. Yanni attended Julliard and has performed alongside many celebrated artists including John Legend and Rufus Wainwright. The video’s choreography is also a stunning performance of the song.
