Video Premiere: Vampire Weekend's "Cousins"

The new video from Vampire Weekend is out today. Watch "Cousins" above!

It may give you motion sickness. And you might end up with confetti in your mouth. But it's fun to watch. And short! Just over 2 minutes!

VW's big full-on new CD, Contra, isn't out until January 12th. So maybe this'll help til then?

P.S. Does your own personal vampire weekend start tonight at midnight when New Moon premieres? Just asking...

Katy Perry Unplugged: Hear her Blow!

Katy.perry

She's hot. She's cold. She's unplugged.

By Selena Watkins

I've long been a big fan of the MTV Unplugged series. And sometime girl-kisser Katy Perry recently performed for the Unplugged crew and the results sounds nothing less than amazing.

I tuned in just to watch her perform "I Kissed a Girl" (which was even better in its unplugged version), but I stayed for the whole clip and now I kind of want to buy the whole performance DVD. It's that good. You'll love Katy even more once you stop, look and listen. Check it out below!

New Vampire Weekend Single "Cousins"! Listen Now!

Vampire_Weekend
"Such nice boys..." Photo by Francois Guillot

So the new Vampire Weekend album, Contra, comes out January 12th, but that hasn't stopped the band from releasing two songs consecutively off the album--"Horchata" was released Oct. 5, while this new song, "Cousins," was released yesterday on Stereogum.

The song's pretty cool. Not much has changed, as VW maintain their pop-rock sensibility and talent for crafting hooky tunes that stay in your head long after you've heard them. "Cousins," in particular, has a hook that simply won't let go, assisted by a punky immediacy that gives the band's trademark sound a new and welcomed kick.

You can listen to it below (you have to register at Lala.com first), or go to any of the links above and check it out for free. And be sure to tell us what you think!

P.S. Logo will air the "Cousins" music video this coming Sunday, Nov. 22nd at midnight on the big NewNowNext Music video show. Tune in!

Video Premiere: Beyoncé feat. Lady Gaga – “Video Phone” Whaddya Think??!!?

Beyonce
FIERCE!??

The gloriously overblown video for the Beyoncé and Lady Gaga collab “Video Phone (Extended Remix)” is finally here! It starts off with a Reservoir Dogs influenced teaser, where Beyoncé looks a tad bit like another superstar singer we might know of, and segues into Beyoncé prancing around in a futuristic two-piece and acting like some sort of ultramodern, robotic dominatrix as she’s surrounded by hard-bodied men with blue masks on…yeah, it’s strange, but coming from director Hype Williams, it’s to be expected.

Lady Gaga joins the proceedings halfway to have a dance-off for the ages against Beyoncé (both wearing the same sexy white outfit. And it’s a tie, in my book). And Beyoncé sporting a white Tee with a G-d up alien on the front towards the end of the vid is icing on the cake.

So what do you guys think? Is it too much? Not enough? I personally feel we needed more Gaga in the mix (it’s technically Beyoncé’s video, but still).

Below is the video, in its entirety:

Joey McIntyre Joins Fight Club? Gets Shirtless, Brawls in New Video for "Here We Go Again"

JoeyMcVideo2
Here's a screengrab of Joey's new aggro look. Somebody's been working out, eh?

Just in case you want to be consoled by not getting to see Levi Johnston's full wiener shots in the coming Playgirl shoot, maybe you'll settle for seeing ex-New Kid on the Block Joey McIntyre in a shirtless Fight-Clubby brawl in the video for his new single, "Here We Go Again."

People.com has the video. Kind of random, maybe? Apparently, this tune (which goes full-frontal on the vocoder over Joey's chorus) is on a forthcoming EP Litle Joe has coming our way soon.

I think it sort of sounds like a castaway tune from a Pink album. In fact, swap out Pink for Joey in this video and it makes more sense, maybe. You know she'd be all into some shirtless brawling.

Anyway, watch the video. Maybe you'll like it?

Bebe Zahara Benet Takes You Behind the Scenes of her "I'm the Sh*t" Video Shoot! Intense!!!!

After Bebe Zahara Benet won RuPaul’s Drag Race this past spring she took to the road, performed at clubs from coast to coast, and then... Well, we all wondered, “What’s next?”

Turns out that the glorious creature went to work on recording a single, entitled delicately, “I’m the Sh*t” (this profanity from the cleanest, sweetest draglet of the whole entire Drag Race cast?). And as you can tell from the “behind-the-scenes” clip above, then she went to work putting together a big-ass production for the music video of the same tune...

This ain’t no homemade drag video. There’s choreographers, teams of dancers, makeup, wardrobe... It’s major!

To celebrate, we sent Bebe some questions about the video, the song, and life in general. Read her sass after the jump!

"Face, face, face..." Bebe's giving you face. And some feathers. And a new single.

Outspoken Adam Lambert Leads the OUT 100! Plus, Wanda Sykes, Cyndi Lauper, Will Young, Ongina & More!

450x620_Out_Dec-Jan
The heads of the big gay "Class of 2009."

The annual roll call of the queer who's-who and who's been sassy beyond belief in 2009 known as the OUT 100 has been unleashed on the public, officially. Ready?

Gracing the cover of OUT Magazine for this annual celebrity handjob/tribute is... Adam Lambert, Wanda Sykes, movie director Rob Marshall, legend Cyndi Lauper and "Don't Ask Don't Tell" warrior Lt. Dan Choi.

And f-word happy Adam Lambert has some great quotes in his profile...

Glambert on fame & pleasing gays:
“I’m doing the best I f*cking can, you know?” Adam Lambert asks, as if there’s any way to satisfy all his critics or fans, none of whom even knew his name a year ago.

On his American Idol performance:
“It’s about making a good TV show. I just wanted to be really careful that it didn’t turn into a f*cking pageant. I can sing my face off. All this other stuff is part of a personality, a persona.”

On coming out:
“I didn’t want to acknowledge [being gay] as a mistake or something I was ashamed of — I’m not. It’s part of who I am, but because our nation is the way it is, it’s an announcement. If I lose some fans, f*ck it. I need to be happy too.”

On sexuality:
“To some people, me being sexual is really offensive because I’m gay. They’re like, ‘He’s being really gay.’ And I’m like, actually, ‘No, I’m just being sexual.’ Male sexuality is frightening to America [but] female sexuality is all over the place.”

Flying Lotus: An Awesome Artist You Really, Really Have to Check Out

From-his-myspace
From: Flying Lotus' MySpace page

Scouring the web for great music, I came across this news article from Pitchfork for an artist I’ve only recently have been listening to: LA-based experimental beat maker Flying Lotus. Don’t let the “experimental” tag fool you at all. Lotus is extremely accessible, cooking up what are arguably some of the most inventive beats in contemporary hip-hop since Timbaland and The Neptunes’ peak back in the early ‘00s.

Pitchfork reports that Lotus has been posting up new beats on his MySpace, including a remix of Lil’ Wayne’s “I Feel Like Dying,” which I personally thought was kinda dull and overrated, but is transformed here as a robotic synth monster that creeps on you slow and steady without ever losing its grip.

Today's Lady Gaga News: Beyonce Duets! Gossip Girl! Her New MakeUp Guy! Christian Siriano! Lindsay Lohan!

450x400_Gaga-Composite-Nov1
Lady Gaga rocks Gossip Girl, duets with Beyonce, inspires Lindsay, and now gets made up by this guy, Billy B!

Another day, another massive onslaught of Lady Gaga news... Here's what I've got for you right now:

1. Gaga's duets with Beyonce are yours for the listening! You can hear their pile-up on “Telephone” (which will be on Gaga’s The Fame Monster) and on “Video Phone” (on Beyonker's big, fat re-release of I Am… Sasha Fierce). Idolator's got 'em. Enjoy!!!

2. You can watch a preview of Gaga's performance on Gossip Girl next Tues (11/17). She rocks out "Bad Romance" for the kids, of course. It's at People.com.

3. Lindsay Lohan is saying she's dying to work with Gaga as she starts studio work on her third album. LiLo tweeted: "I want to do a mini-movie music video with Lady GaGa in L.A., NYC, and all over Europe." Hmmmm... Think Gaga would go for it?

4. The cool gays at World of Wonder have a dishy interview with Gaga's new makeup maven, Billy B, who's the silver fox responsible for her new, improved, outrageously glam looks as seen (so far) in "Bad Romance."

5. And below, fab design elf Christian Siriano recounts for MTV News his experience of dressing Gaga for her first Today show gig way back when. Meaning, last year!

2009 Thanksgifting Holiday Gift Guide: Who Wants to Smell Like Diddy? Plus, Other Celeb Fragrances...

Beckhamsig2

Seasons Greetings!

Hopefully we've already gotten your brains stirring with some crazy gift ideas. If you're still simmering though, it's okay, we've got more...

It’s crazy to think that celebrities make mondo bucks off of their fragrance lines, but they really do. And you’re probably wondering who really buys this stuff. We’ve all wondered too, and then we all purchased some as gifts.

In most cases, we are soooooo not trying to give someone that hint that they smell. You just pick up the biggest fragrance kit ever at the last minute and wrap it in pretty paper, right?

Well, that’s why celebrity fragrances are handy presents. Who does wanna smell like the hot primal essence (or torso or armpit) of your loved one’s favorite celebrity?

1. Justin Timberlake for Givenchy

This year, pick up Justin Timberlake’s new scent. He is the face of luxe label Givenchy’s newest masculine fragrance “Play.” It’s kind of amusing because the discrete bottle resembles an mp3 player. It’s perfect if he (or she) is a music lover. Or if they don't have an iPod and they think you gave them one. Ha-har! Joke's on them!

Wanna Live? Just Press Play...

Adam Lambert's Ballads: Muse + Shirley Bassey + Freddie Mercury = Hell, Yes!

AdamLambert-Shirely-Freddie
Adam Lambert: Serving slow jams channeling Shirley, Freddie and cooked up by Muse. Yum.

RollingStone.com has a good interview with Adam Lambert, delving in to all the stuff behind the music of his album, For Your Entertainment, that explodes all over your face next Monday, November 23rd. (It's already #1 on iTunes. Oy!) Love Lambert? Then, it's worth a look.

I was struck by the way Lambert describes his ballads on the album:

There's three songs that are really emotional, a little bit slower, softer. One of them is a song that Muse wrote, "Soaked." That opens up with a real soft vocal, it's very tender, the lyrics are very vulnerable, then it goes into a soaring ballad-type feel.

That was another example — we got the song from Muse>, and I was sh*tting myself, I couldn't believe it, I thought, "This is incredible, I can't believe they're giving me a song." I'm a huge fan, and it, too, like the rest of the three that I'm talking about, have this real retro feel to it, melodically and even in the style of the production, very Seventies, at times very Sixties, almost like a Shirley Bassey song mixed with a Queen record.

"Broken Open" you could put it in the same category as a downtempo Goldfrapp song or even like Radiohead, there's shades of that in there, very electronic but mellow, very ethereal.

Gaaaaaah! Can this come out already????

Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance" Video: A Bath Haus, Polar Bears & Burning Beds

Well, now we know what really happened to that polar bear from Lost.

Lady Gaga's new video for "Bad Romance" premiered today online. And children, it's insane. Even for Lady Gaga standards.

While the song itself may not be thrilling, the video makes it so. It's creepy, bonkers, lavish, bizarre, gorgeous and full of 9,924 costume changes and more f**ked-up outfits than ever. And yes, Gaga has some weird spinal spokes in her back, scary-big eyes, and she serves up an homage to Farrah Fawcett's Burning Bed by the video's end.

Watch it above. Then watch it again. It's not until about halfway through that you realize there's some real genius ludicrous-ness going on. And when you watch it again it just gets better...

After the jump, lots of stills and commentary.

2009 Thanksgifting Holiday Gift Guide: Things That Sparkle, Dazzle & Shine

Vintage-Gaga-Sunglasses-(2)

The holidays are coming! Rather than bore you with a typical holiday list that mentions items you’re bound to buy anyway, we've compiled a small list of four items we found online that were just too-cool-to-be true.

Vintage Lady Gaga Poker Face Just Dance Sunglasses

As pictured above, these glasses exude hot-pink savvyness with a tidy mix of sharp, too-cool-for-school brashness: the equivalent of wearing a neon sign on your face that advertises how awesome you are. Also comes in Black and White.

Rave Disco Neon Pink Light-Up Poker Sunglasses

A company called Atomic (proper name) actually sells these neon light-up poker sunglasses in a variety of colors. But pink's where it’s at! And besides sporting a long, bizarre title that reads like a horrendous Japanese translation of a product that shouldn't exist, these glasses are simply the shiznit (and for some weird reason, they remind me of slap bracelets).

Kris Allen's "Live Like We're Dying" Video Is Cute and Sincere. Like Kris Allen. Swoon.

Seen adorable Kris Allen's new video for his first official single "Live Like We're Dying"?? I think he's so darn cute I could watch him eat a bowl of sticks. And he's obviously talented and knows his way around a good song. But this one's kind of generic... Zzzzz. I don't hate it; just think he deserves better. And I wish it were a little more risky somehow, or drama-fueled. But maybe that's one thing Mr. Allen isn't?

And I know it's comparing apples and big fierce eye-lined gay oranges, but the tune is no "Time for Miracles." All I'm sayin'...

Allen's album got previewed on AOL if you want a listen, or a review. And below, MTV's rock and pop culture mavens James Montgomery and Jim Cantiello break it down and analyze it. They like that the video appears to have been shot with a real budget. Ka-ching!

Leona Lewis Wants to Make You "Happy" and Make You Cry. Watch the Video!

You've probably heard Leona Lewis' newest tune, "Happy" already. It's getting play all over the place, and is used in the TV commercials for the gut-punching/heart-wrenching new film Precious (which broke a ton of indie box-office records this past weekend). And now here's the "Happy" video, which also premieres today on Logo's NewNowNext PopLab.

Given the Precious assocation, and the song's booming, melodramatic, angsty ballad-ness, I expected a darker video. But this one's got gorgeous Leona meeting some cute guy in some sexy-looking Cuban village. It's hot; I soooo wanna go.

But keep watching the video... This is a Leona ballad, so as gorgeous as it all is (and as SHE is; I die), it's not gonna end too cutely.

Lola is "Fresh Out the Oven!" Check Out a Sneak Peek of J-Lo's Alter Ego

Jlo

Nice shades, but are those really practical, Ms. Lola?

By Selena Watkins

She’s 40 and Fabulous. The Flyy Girl mother of two, Mrs. Jenny from the Block is back for another round.

MTV.COM has a sneak peek of Jennifer Lopez’s new video and alter ego, Lola. The alter ego thing is not supposed to last forever, like Beyonce's Sasha Fierce. Lola is just someone J-Lo chose to represent the single and the video.

I’ve always loved J-Lo as a dancer, actress and yes, as a singer. Ever since her debut album, On the 6, she’s created killer hits. Just in case you've forgotten, let's rehash those with magnitude: "Waiting for Tonight," "If You Had My Love," "Jenny from the Block," "Aint it Funny," "Play," "Love Don't Cost A Thing," "Let's Get Loud," "Get Right," and "I'm Real." Shall I go on?

La Roux on MTV2's "Download and Discover"! See Video for "Quicksand" now!

Elly-Jackson-(top)-(2)
From myspace.com/larouxuk: Elly Jackson of La Roux

Embarrassed as I am to admit this, I've only recently discovered the English electropop duo La Roux—comprised of producer Ben Langmaid and vocalist Elly Jackson—whose singles "In for the Kill" and "Bulletproof" have torn up the charts in the UK throughout most of 2009 ("Kill" peaked the charts at number 2, while "Bulletproof" reached the top spot).

Their sound isn’t new— intentionally-mechanized beats over chilly synths that work well with Jackson's whimsically ‘80s vocals—but La Roux's take on early ‘80s synthpop and new wave is often fresh and inspiring—quite possibly the best pop music around right now (the new Annie album is out in two weeks, so we'll see if that changes).

Lady Gaga Talks Up her Gossip Girl Gig & Her Tour. But What the Hell Is She Saying?

Maybe I've not sipped enough of my giant McCafe this morning (think if I write that McDonald's will send me freebies?), but I can't for the life of me figure out what the hell Lady Gaga is talking about when she describes what her music performance is gonna be like on Gossip Girl on November 19th. Can someone help me translate this? A 35-foot-long dress? Chuck Bass will be totes jealous.

And, remember when the Scissor Sisters performed on Passions? Now, that was some smooth pop-meets-TV magic!

In more Lady Gaga interviews, she also tells MTV's Sway all about her big Monster Ball tour (which sounds amazingly bonkers), her collabo w/Adam Lambert, her rise to fame, the Haus of Gaga, and lots of other batty sh*t. Enjoy, Pumpkins!!!

I've always thought funny man Joel McHale is not only hilarious but quite cute as well. The host of E!'s The Soup and the star of the new NBC show Community appeared in a spread in the recent issue of GQ and is looking quite dapper. More of this McHale.

Fierce Halloween outfits, sexy A-list stars and amazing gay politicians after the jump!

Fergie's "Be Italian" Gives You "Nine" the Hard Way. Can You Take It?

Okay, not sure exactly what that title means, but hopefully it got your attention. The deal is that you can hear Miss Fergie-Ferg singing her tune from the coming movie musical Nine in the trailer above. It's "Be Italian" and it's show-tuney beyond belief which I loooooove.

Of course, I'm super-excited about this diva-laden film anyway... Penelope Cruz, Nicole Kidman, Marion Cotillard, the legendary and waxen Sophia Loren, Dame Judi Dench and others I can't even remember, all singing and dancing up a storm with lots of heels and hair and shmacting! AND Daniel Day-Lewis.

You can also hear the full-on 5-minute version of the "Be Italian" action after the jump.

3Oh!3 And Katy Perry Get "Starstrukk" In Rome!

--By Arielle Baer

As a general rule I love anything Katy Perry touches (from her cover of Outfield's "Use Your Love" to her ex Gym Class Heroes frontman Travis McCoy) so it's no surprise that I can't stop singing her recent collab with 3Oh!3, a band I used to avoid at all costs. And it helps that there are only like four lines in the song!

Even the video (posted above) is totally addictive. It's over the top and makes no sense...in a good way! Why are the boys eating sushi while rock climbing!? Let me do you a favor, just forward to 2:25 for Katy's sexy solo romp in the fountain. Trust me, you won't be disappointed!

There's no fighting the gay-tastic musical/TV juggernaut that is Glee. That is, unless you're MTV's daytime show host Alexa Chung who corrals the entire, supple cast of the show into a rousing game of musical chairs! Who would have thunk that edibly hot Mark Saling would be the first to get bumped? (No worries. I'll comfort him gladly.)

Halloween Interviews with Bette Midler, Martha Stewart & Michael Kors!

Bette Midler's Hulaween Ball 2009 from marti cummings on Vimeo.

For once Michael Kors can't complain about someone's look being too costumey! Broadway Speaks OUT's Marti Cummings hobnobbed with all flavors of celebs at Bette Midler's big annual Hulaween bash this past weekend. It's a big costume klatsch wherein fancy folks dress up to raise money for Midler's amazing NY Restoration Project.

Did you know that over the years Midler and her crew of green do-gooders have picked up over 2,000 tons of trash (insert your own "picking up trash" joke here; she'd approve) and they've helped create over 55 community gardens all over NYC! So nice.

In the video Martha Stewart threatens to ruin Halloween for kids everywhere, Michael Kors serves us a very gay Gregg Allman look, and Crosby Stills & Nash even puff through. Madness! And the towering out comic Judy Gold makes a rather convincing Abe Lincoln. Shocker.

For more on the goodness that Broadway Speaks OUT does, visit their site. For more fun from the Divine One, just go see Bette in Vegas!!!!

Watch "Seven" - Fever Ray's Latest And Most Confusing Attempt At A Video!

-- By Arielle Baer

It's always hard to make heads or tails of anything Swede rocker Fever Ray puts out, but her video for "Seven" takes it to the next level. Is this some kind of sacrificial dance we're watching? Or did grandma get into the liquor cabinet again and decide to relive her beauty pageant days? Either way one things for certain - that sparkle gown is fierce!

Yet I can't help but wonder...is this what Lady Gaga will look like in forty years?

Monster Mash-Up: Thrill with our Spooky Halloween Music Video Mix! Trick or Treat, Y'all!

Because half of you will be this bloody mess this Halloween, whether it's intentional or not.

Lights' Uber-Foxy "Fire Night" Video: Glitter, Candles, Makeup & Halloween Fierceness. Watch!

Almost Halloween!!!! I'm already regretting all the candy I'm gonna snarf, but it's no more decadent than this gloriously sparkling and ripely righteous video for the new single "Fire Night" by Brooklyn's electro-disco hellions Lights. (And bonus: It was directed by my Logo work colleague Lauryn Siegel.) It's sick!

As NYMag.com puts it: "You could die high and go to Halloween heaven and it wouldn’t equal" the amazingness here. Glitter, bitchin' makeup, pouty rock girls, murky pretty liquids slithering around and stuff burning... It's really all you need.

Well, that about 40 snack-size Almond Joys.

Florence + the Machine: The New Stevie Nicks Has Arrived? Live NYC Show Review! Gush! Love!

450x300_FlorenceDressWide
Just like a white wing dove, and with killer pipes and spewing power and emotion: Florence Walsh of Florence + the Machine.

by Paul O'Donnell

As a New Yorker today we are often plagued with the feeling that we missed out on something. There's always so much going on, where else should I be right now? Or did I get to NYC 15 years too late? Have I missed an era or all of the monumental moments? Last night proved that wrong when Britain's Florence + the Machine took the stage at the classic Bowery Ballroom. Wow.

First, haunting Holly Miranda opened the show for Florence. Missing her sidekick violinist Marques Toliver, but backed up by guitarist Tim Mislock and the infamous Nada Surf she sent goosebumps though the crowd from beneath a veil of overgrown bangs. Her performance was spectacular and had an edge of heavy rock that came slightly close to matching the razor sharpness of her voice. Miranda is definitely someone to watch, and last night she was the perfect intro to Florence + the Machine.

So here goes...

Florence's first real New York show, supporting her just-released CD Lungs (which is brilliant), introduced the audience to someone who will be remembered. A new Courtney Love mixed with Stevie Nicks, Florence pelted out vocals that were jaw-dropping while whirling around her flames of red hair contrasted against a white dress of flowing magic. Surrounded by disco-ball twilight Florence banged on a drum, put both hands in the air a la Eva Peron and let out some of the most beautifully awkward notes that made you wonder if you should cry or laugh nervously...

Sigh. Ladies and gentlemen, it was amazing.

Weezer + Lil Wayne = “Can’t Stop Partying”! Whattya Think?

Weezer-(2)

As you’ve already heard by now, Weezer’s collaboration with Lil Wayne leaked into the blogosphere yesterday afternoon, and it’s…interesting.

In time for Weezer’s seventh album, Raditude, out next week, the unlikely collaboration, on a song aptly titled “Can’t Stop Partying,” signals an interesting move forward musically for both Weezer and Lil Wayne (who pled guilty to attempted criminal possession of a weapon last week and faces a year in jail).

Jeffree Star Interview Exclusive: Talking Lady Gaga, Halloween, Sex & His "Beauty Killer" Album

Media glamazon Jeffree Star is busy these days. Touring and appearing to promote his debut Beauty Killer album, and just basically continue his flame-haired world domination, he cruised through NYC recently, and we stalked him at his record label's office and chatted him up!

The gender-f**ker pop starlet was as outspoken and fabulous as ever (and really nice, too)! Watch our little video chat above as he dished about his love of rough boys, his Halloween plans (catch him at the West Hollywood Halloween Carnaval this Saturday night), his thoughts about what Lady Gaga's got between her legs, and how he uses his media fame for good. Is Jeffree a drag queen? Is he trans? Just an extra-sparkly boy? We'll let him do the talking, thanks. He's best it at, after all.

Attention "Sexy People": Meet Lolene & Her Disco Vagina! An Exclusive Interview! Watch the Video!

Lolene2
Signature big curly hair.

by Selena Watkins

She emerges onto the pop music stage courtesy of a giant disco vagina.

Lolene that is, a new, sassy gay-loving pop artist from England who you're likely to hear more of very, very soon. The "disco vagina" is her own creation; it's her own theoretic vessel that's gonna spew her out into the realm of pop music domination. In the next five years, she said she sees herself ruling the charts.

Now racking up club appearances from Vegas to NYC, Lolene is serving up her music, which she dubs as "Universal Awkward Pop." She declared: “It’s flamboyant. It’s extroverted. It’s colorful. It’s brave. It’s unrestrained.”

Her style is very "Joan Collins, Dynasty, Studio 54," she says, but for the 19-year-old who hasn't slightest idea what that means, “It’s definitely super-pop, but with jagged, edgy elements that are a little bit spiky and a little bit hard to swallow sometimes.”

Lolene hails from Bristol, England, ditching home to seek out the big lights of Hollywood, California to be a songwriter. She began writing songs for other artists because it allowed her to keenly develop her skills while playing different roles and becoming different characters.

And yes, she knows the big move to Hollywood sounds cliché. “You know, everyone moves there with stars in their eyes,” she said. “But for me it was something that I knew I had to do.”

Julian Casablancas’ "Phrazes For The Young" Out Nov. 3! Listen to the "11th Dimension" Single Now!

Cover art: "Phrazes For The Young"

Julian Casablancas, lead singer of NYC garage rock revivalists The Strokes, comes out with his solo debut, Phrazes for the Young, on Nov. 3.

Aside from an AWESOME PROMO released a few months back, I didn’t know much about the album until the lead single, “11th Dimension,” debuted early last month.

The single’s been getting a lot of attention from music blogs and online magazines (including a glowing review over at Pitchfork), with cheerful, peppy synth flourishes accompanied by a muted drum beat that works surprisingly well with Casablancas’ so-bored-its-cool vocals.

David Archuleta's Christmas Visit to MTV, in October. Watch the Caroling Madness! Spot the Gays!

The genius Jim Cantiello over at MTV News has struck again. This time, he wrangled elfin American Idol runner-up David Archuleta for a spin around the MTV offices for some whacked-out Christmas caroling. In October?

It's all a frolicsome way to hype up Archuleta's just released Xmas album, Christmas from the Heart. And God bless the little sugar plum. He seems about up for anything!

The video also shows just how many gay (or gay-ish?) Idol fans there are in the MTV offices. Can you spot 'em???

Whoa. Is this CD cover a bit freaky looking? Is Archuleta serving us Cindy Lou Who realness? Am I being Grinchy?

Watch P!nk's New Video: "I Don't Believe You" Gorgeous! Moody! Wedding Gowns!

I Don't Believe You

Pink | MySpace Music Videos

This new video for "I Don't Believe You" is some gorgeous stuff, courtesy of everyone's favorite butch/femme/amazing pop star P!nk and her Funhouse album. I'm so loving her. And I'm mildly obsessed with Pink's Twitter feed these days, @Pink. She's constantly gabbing back and forth with Sandra Bernhard (who's a big fan), and sending trippy/twisted updates from her world tour.

Last night @SandraBernhard tweeted to Pink: "Where are you now Gypsy Woman? Right behind Cher and Stevie Nicks you are our heir apparent to the gypsy crown. Wagons moving out!"

Tell it, Sandy. Yee-haw!

This Week In Fabulous 10/16: Burlesque Dancers, Chart-Topping Divas and a Gleeful Madonna!

Gagamadonna
Now this is a fabulous pairing. Hopefully Madonna will wise up and collaborate with the amazingness that is Lady Gaga!

--By Cory Stottlemyer

Lots of fabulous news has happened concerning female singers this week. I'm not complaining!

5. Kristen Bell is joining the cast of the new Cher/Christina Aguilera movie!

Kristen Bell of Veronica Mars, Heroes and Gossip Girl fame, will be playing the role of a cabaret singer in the new Cher/Christina Aguilera flick, Burlesque. Cher plays the owner of a struggling cabaret, and Kristen will be playing her number one girl. If you have never heard Kristen sing, then have a listen above. Christina has some competition!

Lots of singing divas after the jump!

Watch Weezer's New Video: "(If You're Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To"

"Welcome to Weezerville" indeed. Rivers Cuomo and the Weezer boys are back, and they must be working with a serious budget because this new video looks pretty luxe, and their sound is polished and glossier than ever!

The video for the first jangly single "(If You're Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To" is pretty sharp. Beware of femme fatales who bring a plague of Final Destination-ish carnage in their wake. See, I knew girls were nothing but trouble!

You like the song? Is it weird that it sounds bit teeny-boppery to me? Have the guys been listening to All-American Rejects? And the new album Raditude (coming soon; November 3rd) will also feature guest stints from Lil' Wayne, Jermaine Dupri and some fierce Indian musicians. Sounds like it's gonna be kooky.

Weezer-Raditude

Get lots more behind-the-scenes stuff on the video and interviews with Cuomo and the band over at Babelgum.

And since I can never resist this kind of stuff: Here's Weezer doing a random mash-up cover of "Kids/Poker Face." Just 'cuz!

Do You Like Rihanna's New Single, "Russian Roulette?"

Rihanna1
Always fierce.

by Selena Watkins

Rihanna digitally delivered her new single "Russian Roulette" to us yesterday morning at 11:23am Eastern (how exact.)

Everybody’s been talking about it, and twittering it up, but I don’t exactly love it. I expected something a little feistier for a first single. No?

The song is very dramatic with lyrics like, "As my life flashes before my eyes, I'm wondering will I ever see another sunrise," and "Know that I must pass this test, so just pull the trigger."

It's really moving and powerful, so don't get me wrong it is a great song. (Bravo to the songwriters and Ri-Ri for maturing as a vocalist.) I just really expected something up-tempo for her first single.

The video for “Russian Roulette” will air on ABC sometime soon. No date or time has been specified yet. So far, all we’ve seen is the feisty cover shot for the single where she wears nothing but barbed wire. How risqué.

Rihanna2
So, imagine what the album cover will be.

Adam Lambert's "Time for Miracles" Video Premieres! Watch It! Then, Run for Your Lives!!!

Time For Miracles

Adam Lambert | MySpace Music Videos

I think this video just made me cry. Or explode. Or die in a tsunami. Watch the big insane apocalyptic schmaltzy brilliance that is Adam Lambert's "Time for Miracles" video (which premiered on MySpace this morning). His voice makes freeways crumble, flameballs fall from the sky, buildings topple and tidal waves ravage the earth. Woo-hoo! Attagrrrrl!

Okay, maybe that's all just cheezy CGI footage from the forthcoming disaster flick 2012, but it's amazing. Mr. Lambert acts his pants off (only figuratively kids) and wails like a softer, younger, Steven Tyler (but less screechy; and sounding a little Richard Marx-y, frankly). And wears a serious black helmet of hair. And he's sooty. Anybody got a Wet-Nap?

And yes, I'll imagine Lambert is singing to me. If the world is ending, I want a power ballad to distract me please.

Year-End Club Banger: Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ “Heads Will Roll (A-Trak Remix)”

YYYs-(1)

Just when I thought the well had dried up for any great dance releases this year, along comes this awesome remix from New York-based DJ and turntablist A-Trak of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ similarly awesome synthpop smash Heads Will Roll (my favorite track off YYYs’ solid third album It’s Blitz!).

A-TRAK-(1)
DJ A-Trak

Officially released yesterday via Pitchfork via Discobelle, Heads Will Roll (A-Trak Remix) is a nuts-and-bolts dance track that wouldn’t feel out of place in the early 1990s (club music’s beloved renaissance), delighting the listener in its willful simplicity: gleefully synthetic bass drums; the always reliable 808; thick, rubbery basslines accompanied by cheesy, Vegas-y synth flourishes—heaven in 6:25.

Adam Lambert Gropes, Suckles Naked Lady Model for Details! See the Hot Pics! And the Photo Shoot Video!

450x260_AdamLambertDetails1
Um, Adam... That's not her head. You might wanna turn her... Oh, never mind.

Oh hell... Not sure if fussy gay purists are gonna get their knickers twisted over this, BUT I for one am loooving the smutty/arty pics of Adam Lambert getting all smoochy/sucky/gropey with a pretty lady model in the pages of the new Details magazine.

"Wha...? We have our one big new gay pop Idol and they have to make him conform to some hetero-cheeseball rock 'n' roll frat-boy fantasy???" Whatevs. I'm happy that Lambert can have some fun with his image. And he looks hot as hell in the pics. Plus, in the behind-the-scenes video, you can see him having a good laugh at the silliness of it all. How does he describe the shoot? In a word: "Heterosexual..." he laughs. Go Adam!

Check out the video and all the pics... Awww, isn't media riciculous-ness fun?

In the video, Lambert discusses early crushes on Madonna & Paula Abdul, but fear not gays: the openly Jewish star also openly encourages male fans to toss their jock straps on stage. F*ck, yeah!!!!

Dig all the foxy NSFW photos after the jump! And goodness, I haven't even read the cover story yet. Probably oughtta do that.

Adam Lambert & Lady Gaga Record a Song for Lambert's New Album! Yay! Excited Much?

450x500_LadyGagaAdamLambert
Gaga + Glambert = Not a Bad Romance Whatsoever!

Yup, Adam Lambert and Lady Gaga got together yesterday to record a song that Ms. G wrote for the Idol runner-up. MTV News' crafty Jim Cantiello (aka @JambaJim) has been Tweeting about the news all morning, and he's got the full story!

Lambert tweeted a confirmation early today: "Yes it's true: I spent yesterday in the studio w the insanely talented and creative Lady Gaga recording a song that she wrote! I love her," Lambert tweeted. He soon added: "GaGa just gets it, ya know?"

It's not yet certain if the tune (not a duet, just a hot new Gaga-penned tune for Glambert) will be on Lambert's debut post-Idol release, For Your Entertainment, slated to drop on November 23rd. But why the hell not? Crank it out, kids!

This news makes me happy, even if we all saw it coming a mile away. Wasn't it inevitable that Lambert would be riding on Gaga's disco stick sooner or later? Yee-haw!

Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance" Single: Listen to the Real Deal Now!

450x450_LadyGaga-BadRomance

Because it's not a day in 2009 that some Lady Gaga news doesn't pop up... Today we get the official version of Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance" single. Click and give it a listen!

Sounds very "Poker Face"; and I'm not sure about all the "rah-rah, ga-ga" chanting. And also not sure about the "Walk, walk, fashion baby" rappy stuff. Er, sounds a bit dumb. BUT, I've also already listened to it twice and it's stuck madly in my head. Damn you, Gaga!!!!

Bring on more Fame Monster tracks, please!!!

Tween Idol Mika's New "Rain" Video Premieres Online! Plus, His "Poker Face" Cover!

450x300_Mika-CandyBar
Mika: Sweet as candy and beloved by kids just as much.

I had the good fortune of catching Mika in concert in NYC on Friday night. Yee-haw, that lanky Lebanese-born pop-star puts on a good show! Marionettes, giant inflatable balls, day-glo outfits, zingy pop music and a house-full of screaming gays and 13-year-old girls.

Did you know Mika had such a crrrraazzy rabid tween fan-base? Seriously, it seemed like over half the crowd was comprised of 7th-grade girls, their bffs, and their parents. It certainly made for an enthusiastic crowd! They sang along (loudly!), screamed, danced in the aisles and gushed effusively. (Ok, so did the gays, too.)

Below, check out the spooky/sassy video for "Rain" which hit the 'net today! And the "Rain" CD single (out Nov. 23rd) will feature "Rain" remixes and a Mika cover of "Poker Face," which is pretty hot. He did it for a BBC Radio1 Live Lounge show.

And in case you missed it, below is a somewhat grainy clip of the "Blame It On the Girls" video which popped up online recently, too. CUTE!

X Factor's Leading Men: Danyl Johnson & Joe McElderry. Got a Favorite?

DanylJohnson_Oct19JoeMcElderry_91804867
X Factor's Top Men: Danyl Johnson & Joe McElderry (right).

The UK's X Factor talent competition show is going strong. Whitney Houston performed on it this past Saturday (her dress was a mess; as many say her performance was). And then the show's judge Dannii Minogue got in trouble for joking on-air about contestant Danyl Johnson's bisexuality.

But Danyl Johnson needn't apparently worry. He's one of the front-runners to win the competition. And yes, he has come out as bisexual; he's apparently hosted a long-running karaoke show at London's gay Ku Bar for awhile. Meanwhile, other contestants say Danyl's an arrogant bully. Eh? Below is his performance of Whitney Houston's "I Didn't Know My Own Strength." Whattya think?

And then there's cute-as-a-Disney-chipmunk Joe McElderry. I'm not finding published evidence of Joe's gayness; but apparently in a back-story profile, as a kid Joe dabbled in transvestitism (but what kid doesn't)? For what it's worth, Boy George tweeted this past weekend: "I think Joe McElderry should win X Factor, he has great soul and a gorgeous smile." Does Joe have your Gaydar buzzing?

Watch performances by both Danyl and Joe below. You like? In that way?

Recovering Divas: Whitney on X Factor; Boy George Talks Rehab. Are They Back for Good?

WhitneyCropped_Oct19BoyGeorge_Oct19
Whitney on TV in Germany this past week; Boy George hits a London fashion show last month.

This weekend two 80s divas hit the UK media circuit in a big way. Whitney Houston did a guest performance on Simon Cowell's X Factor talent parade (the Idol-esque show which gave the world Leona Lewis). The show's contestants all sang songs by divas, with Whitney's hits getting peformed by a bunch of them. You can watch her performance of "Million Dollar Bill" on the show below.

How do you think Whitney did? Some of the UK press have been critical about it. Yes, she was a little messy. She might wanna stay away from dancing, frankly. Her begrudging attempts at choreography were sort of amusingly weak; but you could tell she didn't care. And besides, her dress was nearly falling off! And, the gown was all wrong anyway; way too matronly diva. She should be in a shorter, more contemporary dress. That big droopy sequined number was weighing her down, she had to drag it all over the stage.

But she's still fascinating to watch. Of course, Boy George sniped via his @theBoyGeorge Twitter account: "Whitney was messy on X-Factor, it's not right and it's far from ok!" Such a bitch (I sort of love it.) Though maybe he was commenting on the way her performance was handled or conceived, rather than Whitney's own responsibility for it? Who can say?

Annie’s “Don’t Stop” (Finally) Hits Stores November 17!

AnnieCDCover-(2)

Delayed for over a year (with a myriad of leaked track listings to boot), Norwegian electro-pop chanteuse Annie’s sophomore album, Don’t Stop, finally sees the light of day on November 17.

Though it’d be hard to expect another stellar pop album similar to its predecessor, Anniemal (named the 167th album of the 2000s by Pitchfork), I think the next album will show traces of maturity in both lyrical and musical content while still keeping a foot in the power-pop bliss that made the latter album such a fresh, rewarding listen.

The single “Songs Remind Me of You” sounds like she’s onto something promising, giving me hope the rest of the album doesn’t falter the way other sophomore releases quite often do.

Hot Messes Take Note: Ke$ha's "Tik Tok" Is the Song You'll Be Hearing All Weekend! Get Ready.

KE$HA | MySpace Music Videos

Ke$ha used to sing back-up for Britney, she appeared in Katy Perry's "I Kissed a Girl" video, and her whole Nashville family was featured in an episode of The Simple Life. And now, she may just be the next pop-princess/bad-girl-you-should-know.

Her single "Tik Tok" is busting out all over radio nationwide, and chances are you're gonna hear it if you go out to dance around a bit this weekend. And in addition to have those good Britney/Katy connections, Ke$ha is also ever-so-resourceful. Here's how this plucky 22-year-old is coping with hard times these days through her music:

"I just really wanted to embody the lifestyle that I live," Ke$ha told PopEater about the song, "Tik Tok." "We're all young and broke and it doesn't matter. We can find clothes on the side of the street and go out and look fantastic, and kill it. If we don't have a car that doesn't stop us, because we'll take the bus. If we can't afford drinks, we'll bring a bottle in our purse. It's just about not letting anything bring you down."

Attagirl! Also, Ke$ha likes beer and behaving badly. And taking pictures of such exploits. Her MySpace photo albums are fun treasure trove of drunky pics and snarky captions. Enjoy!

450x300_Ke$haBeerBottle
Ke$ha: "Charm School, here I come!!!!

And watch out for her full-length album coming in 2010. Cheers!
