Students Honor Tradition By Stripping Naked At Yale-Harvard Football Game
Yale and Harvard are longtime football rivals, but one of the more exciting elements of Saturday's game took place off the field: A dozen students stripped naked and mooned the crowd, honoring a 45-year-old tradition.
Gameplay at Harvard Stadium was delayed by a dozen Yalies mooning the Crimson (and flashing their fellow Bulldog fans).
It began in 1970, when a single Yale student mooned Harvard boosters. The following years, some of his classmates joined him and the "Sayville strip"ânamed for one of Yale's residential collegesâhas been a regular occurrence ever since.
The Yale Daily News explains the ritual:
With two minutes left in the third quarter, a cry of, âShoes,â rises from the fans underneath the Saybrook flag. As the third quarter winds to a close, the cry grows feverish as Saybrook students spin their shoes in the air in anticipation.
Finally, with a cry of, âBif, bop, bam, bip. We are Saybrook, watch us strip,â the strip is on.
We're not sure if the nudity helped, but Yale did win, 21-14.
The weather, if you're curious, was 50 degrees and sunny.
