Should Nathan Lane, who voiced Timon in the original 1994 animated blockbuster, have been considered for the remake? He discussed the snub Friday on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

Apparently, the gay star of Hulu’s now-canceled series Difficult People sent a “complimentary and lovely” email to Lane about filling the older star’s big shoes. “Very unlike Billy Eichner,” Lane joked.
Lane wrote Eichner a response, which he proceeded to read on-air: “How dare you?! What’s next—you and Ryan Gosling in The Birdcage? I’d name another of my successful films but I don’t have one.”
“Hakuna fuckin’ matata,” Lane continued. “However, now that gay rights have come so far, in this version Timon can finally marry Pumbaa and live openly in the Serengeti. Believe me, once you’ve had warthog, you never go back.”
Seth Rogen has been tapped to play Pumbaa in the live-action remake.
Lane next stars as Roy Cohn in the upcoming Broadway revival of Angels in America.
