Neon Trees' Tyler Glenn Slams Mormon Church In New Video

"There have been over 40 suicides within the church as a result of this policy... It's not of God."

Neon Trees' Tyler Glenn is breaking out on his own, and his solo debut is a biting response to his life in the Mormon Church.

Glenn came out as gay and a proud Mormon two years ago, but his new song, "Trash," denounces the church for its conservative view of homosexuality.

The electro-pop track's accompanying music video is filled with Mormon imagery, including portraits of Joseph Smith, the church's founder.

Glenn recently spoke with Rolling Stone about how he tried to keep his faith in the Mormon Church after coming out, but revealed that its recent ban on members of the LGBT community was the last straw.

"My entire life and perspective on God, the afterlife, morals and values, my self-worth and my born sexual orientation has been wired within the framework of this religion that doesn't have a place for me," he told the music magazine. "I served [this church]. I was the square peg trying to fit into the round hole. I believed it 'til six months ago."

Glenn had hoped to become an ambassador to his church on more progressive views when he first came out in 2014, but now feels he needs to speak out in a different way.

"The big problem here is that they claim it's the only truth," he says. "There have been over 40 suicides within the church as a result of this policy. These aren't just grown men and women. Many are children. It's backwards. It's not of God. I needed to make this statement to artfully show the pain of a faith crisis and the darkness of doubt, but also that there's ways to reclaim what is yours."

Glenn says a full solo album is in the works, but for now, check out the video for "Trash" below.
