New Artwork Celebrating Inclusivity Unveiled At The Minneapolis-Saint Paul Airport

The three pieces from artist Philip Noyed welcome all to the Twin Cities.

Last week, the Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (MSP) unveiled a series of three artworks focused on welcoming all travelers. The three pieces were created by artist, Philip Noyed, who was selected to create the pieces as the first major art installations at MSP in 15 years.

The first installation, “Star of the North,” or "L'Etoile du Nord" is based on the Minnesota State Motto, first adopted in 1861 and appearing on the state seal. The work is six-feet tall, made of aluminum and covered with holographic rainbow vinyl. Inside the star is a crystal prism that is lit so tiny light rainbows show on the ground below the star.

A statement from MSP explains that "L'Etoile du Nord" employs rainbows "both to be beautiful, but also to impart the meaning that anybody of any race, creed, nationality, or sexual orientation are welcome in Minnesota."

The second installation, "Aurora Borealis," brings the Northern Lights to life in a 60-foot long installation through a series of images shown on a diamond made of clear acrylic rods and lit with LED color lights that go through the colors of the rainbow.

The third installation, entitled “Leap of Joy,” was inspired by works from artist Henri Matisse and the Fauves’ painting, "Bonheur de Vivre" ("The Joy of Life"). The display includes a 3D-printed leaper covered in holographic rainbow vinyl. The image includes floating diamonds that curve to mimic the way an airplane turns.

All three pieces are currently on display at various locations throughout the airport.
