Mattel has released two new Barbie collections leading up to International Women’s Day: The new Inspiring Women line, which honors diverse women from history, includes Frida Kahlo, Amelia Earhart, and NASA mathematician Katherine Johnson Barbie dolls.
“The [new Barbies] pay tribute to incredible heroines of their time; courageous women who took risks, changed rules, and paved the way for generations of girls to dream bigger than ever before,” Mattel spokesperson Marissa Beck told CNN.
The company plans to expand the Inspiring Women collection, but in the meantime, has also released a new line of 14 “Shero” dolls featuring contemporary figures like Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins and Olympic snowboarder Chloe Kim, and Australian wildlife conservationist Bindi Irwin.
“We are thrilled to shine a light on real-life role models to remind girls that they can be anything,” said Barbie senior vice president Lisa McKnight.
The idea for the new figures came from a survey commissioned by Mattel, in which 81% of mothers said they were concerned about the kind of role models their daughters were exposed to.
In honor of #InternationalWomensDay, we are committed to shining a light on empowering female role models past and present in an effort to inspire more girls.
