New GoFundMe Policy Prevents Anti-Gay Bigots Like Kim Davis From Cashing In

Hopefully it will also act as a deterrent for others in the future.

Disgraced Rowan County clerk Kim Davis won’t be cashing in on her homophobic martyrdom, so long as GoFundMe has anything to say about it.

Thanks to a slew of anti-gay folks that have used the crowdsourcing platform to swindle supporters out of millions of dollars before her, the site has updated their terms of service to bar people like Davis from profiting off of their bigotry.

The site previously faced outrage for allowing campaigns supporting an Indiana pizzeria and an Oregon bakery that refused to serve gay people, among others, to raise funds in the name of homophobia.

Updated in April, a new specific policy invalidates campaigns benefitting people or groups “facing formal charges or claims of serious violations of the law.” This includes: “Campaigns in defense of formal charges or claims of heinous crimes, violent, hateful, sexual or discriminatory acts.”

Moreover, GoFundMe announced in a blog post that they’d be sharing details of similar deleted campaigns with anyone who would like to file a police report alleging “any misuse of fundraising proceeds.”

At time of posting, we couldn’t find any active campaigns for Kim Davis on GoFundMe or any other crowdsourcing site. So, it appears to be working.
