New "Jem And The Holograms" Trailer Is Truly, Truly... Out Now

We totally freaked when news of a Jem and the Holograms feature film was announced—especially with John M. Chu as director.

But the first trailer, which dropped this week, has fans worried their dreams of a wild homage to the New Wave pastel girl-power cartoon from the 1980s will never come true.

The plot is cannily updated: Jerrica Benton (Amber Peebles), is an average teen thrust into the spotlight when a video of her singing, posted by her sister, Kimber (Stefanie Scott), goes viral.

And we love Ryan Guzman as love interest Rio and Juliette Lewis as Erica Raymond (a tweak on the cartoon's Eric Raymond).

But, at least from the trailer, it feels like the film fails to capture the cartoon's over-the-top look and feel. It's just giving us "truly outrageous."

What do you think? Watch the trailer and weigh in.

Jem and the Holograms hits theaters October 23.
