Required Listening, October 18 Releases. Each week we’re gathering five (if we can find five we can get behind) new releases that we think are worth a listen. This week’s hodgepodge features a musical icon, former emo hero, and a not-so-stealthy film recommendation.

Patrick Stump, Soul Punk - The former Fall Out Boy frontman has been working on his solo debut since the pop-punk group split for hiatus in 2009. The record has been in the can for almost a year, with release dates pushed around repeatedly, but the tracks have simply gotten better with age, especially singles like "Spotlight (Oh Nostalgia)" and "This City" (feat. Lupe Fiasco.)

Dirty Girl Soundtrack - This is getting a recommendation because we’ve been told by our friends lucky enough to have seen it in festivals over the past year that the coming of age film is a must. It’s got a wider release now, and the album features tracks by Wendy & Lisa and Sheena Easton, so you can’t go wrong.

The Joy Formidable, The Big More - While it’s not a full release, the new EP from Joy Formidable is worth a mention. It’s got a limited run of 500 copies available only at their shows, but who buys physical CDs anymore? It’s unlimited digitally, and features remixes, a live version of “Whirring” and a much anticipated studio recording of “Anemone.”

Jane’s Addiction, The Great Escape Artist - Did you know Jane’s Addiction hasn’t released an album in 8 years? The first single, “Irresistible Force,” is psychedelic and trippy enough for us to be intrigued and check out what Perry Farrel and the boys have been up to.

Cher, The Best of Cher: The Imperial Recordings 1965-1968 - Yes, it's a boxset and you might have some of these songs, but there are 44 tracks so it is somewhat likely there’s something new to uncover. Plus it’s Cher, the equivalent of gay required reading, and most of us were probably not born when she was doing this in the '60s. Think of it as paying your dues.
