Jillian's Peak, a web series about an African American woman coming to terms with her sexuality, is being created for one very specific reason — there's nothing else like it out there.

“I created Jillian’s Peak because I wanted to see lesbians of color and African descent reflected in a quality web series,” said Charzette Torrence, creator and co-writer of the new series. “Our stories are extremely underrepresented across the film industry, including on the web."

And that's something Torrence plans to change.

The web drama will follow the journey of Jillian Thomas as she tries to navigate life while coming to terms with who she really is.

Torrence spoke with NewNowNext about her passion project, and revealed an interesting source of her inspiration.

"Being from Detroit, Michigan, I’m a great admirer of Berry Gordy," she revealed. "He saw the need to change the face, culture and visual identity of music in America and to showcase the great talents of African American men and women musicians that were not being heard or seen during that era. He did it successfully and changed the world. I have the same aspirations for this web series. I want to elevate the lives and stories of African American lesbians by weaving together a vibrant tapestry of their experiences through film."

Torrence also told us she hopes to eventually take the series to the next level by persuading outlets like HBO or Netflix to pick it up, providing an even further reach to tell her story.

"It is my quest to shine a light on our community, show the depth of our experiences, and depict real stories that are rarely told," she said. "African American lesbians have been forgotten for far too long in film and media. It is time for us to step out from behind the scenes. It is time to show the world who we are."

Jillian's Peak is set to begin filming early next year, and will premiere in the late summer or early fall of 2016.
