New York Teacher Suspended After Giving Students LGBT Handout

"This program saves lives."

A New York health teacher has been placed on paid administrative leave after parents complained that students received objectionable handouts detailing LGBT issues, the Post Star reports.

The handouts were given out to the seventh and 10th grade health classes at Cambridge Central School as part of a presentation by a visiting staff member from the Pride Center of the Capital Region.

A four-page handout geared to seventh graders provided definitions for words such as homophobia, intersex, polyamory, pansexual, bisexual, cisgender, and gender-nonconforming. Another 42-page handout for 10th graders went into greater detail on transgender issues and defined more colloquial terms like top, bottom, bear, pitcher, catcher, and fag hag.

“The parents have concerns, and they are mine as well,” says superintendent Vince Canini. “We have never had this issue before. We may have to make some policy changes because of it."

The school district has already investigated whether the teacher had reviewed the presenter's handouts in advance and is now consulting with an attorney. Canini says that while the school's principal was aware of the presentation, she had not seen the handouts or known its specific topics.

“I would like to again stress that the topic of gender identity was never of concern,” Canini adds. “The graphic ‘common terms and definitions’ were. The two are totally separate but have been blurred into one, which is not the case.”

Martha Harvey, president and CEO of the Pride Center of the Capital Region, is unaware of any previous parental complaints in the 12 years their presentations have been used in schools.

“Transgender kids are coming out younger and younger," she says. "Middle school is not too early to start. If you love your kids, you want them to have the most information possible. If a parent has a problem with this presentation, that’s the parent’s problem. This program saves lives."

Listed on the school's website, health class topics include “sexuality education,” specifically "anatomy and physiology, puberty and adolescent development, identity, pregnancy and reproduction, STD and HIV, healthy relationships and personal safety."

"I have no problem with the school talking about diversity," says parent Sirell Fiel. "Gay kids are out there, and the kids need to know about it. But the problem I have is that it went so in-depth. That’s too much for 11- and 12-year-olds."

Neither the suspended teacher nor the presenter have been officially identified.
