New York City has now acknowledged non-binary as an official gender and is moving to add that option to government documents.

As the New York Daily News reports, New Yorkers who do not identify as male or female will be able to choose a third gender option on their birth certificates under a law passed by City Council earlier this week. It is expected to be signed into law by Mayor Bill de Blasio.

This law will also mean that individuals will be able to change their gender on official documents without a doctor's sign off. The option will be acknowledged as an X, aiming to recognize New Yorkers who are gender non-conforming or identify with multiple genders.

In a City Hall press conference, New York City Council Speaker Corey Johnson spoke to the importance of this legislation: “There are plenty of New Yorkers who don’t identify as either male or female. Gender is a spectrum for many folks, and it’s not a fixed thing. So for New Yorkers who are transgender, who are gender non-conforming, who are non-binary, to have an option to better self-identify on such an important document, their birth certificate, unlocks all sorts of things for them.”

New York is the most recent city to officially allow a third gender option on official documents. The news follows passage of similar laws in the states of California and Oregon in 2017.
