Though El Coro Gay de Ciudad de México was invited to perform with the NYCGMC at the “Big Gay Sing” concert prior to theelection, it’s taken on special significance in the months following Donald Trump’s victory.

“The show will celebrate New York as a vibrant, outward-looking city, with multiculturalism at the heart of its success,” says artistic director Charlie Beale. “As a chorus with an international reach and the power to make an impact at this very sensitive time, we’re delighted to have them. They sound amazing and, you know, screw walls!”

That the concert will occur as the Trump administration moves forward with its anti-immigrant agenda is not lost on other chorus members. either.

“With the current political climate—and the promise of a dividing wall being built between Mexico and the United States—it’s important for us as an organization to show that we don’t support that kind of hate,” says Ryan Scoble, director of “Big Gay Sing.”

“We do our best to provide a safe space where all our singers can feel accepted for who they are. And that transfers to our Mexico City brothers. We accept them for their LGBTQ identities, as well as for their country of origin.”

“Big Gay Sing: Welcome to New York” will be held at NYU Skirball Center for the Performing Arts at 8pm Friday, March 24, and Saturday, March 25, and Sunday March 26 at 3pm. Tickets are available at nycgmc.org.
