New York Gym Sued By Customer Who Witnessed Men Masturbating In Steam Room

The plaintiff claims the gym failed to take any action.

A man has filed suit against a Manhattan gym, alleging he was an unwilling witness to two men masturbating in the steam room.

The alleged victim, referred to in court papers only as G.B., told the New York Post he was at the Equinox gym in Gramercy Park in November, relaxing in the corner of the sauna when he was interrupted by an unsightly scene.

“The steam clears…and I look across from me. This gentleman, sitting pretty close, his towel is open, his legs are spread and he’s looking right at me, and the guy next to him was rubbing [the man’s] inner thigh. He’s looking right at me, his towel’s off and he’s masturbating.”

The plaintiff, described by the Post as a straight, single dad, then noticed a third man was also staring at him while masturbating. Fearing he would be sexually assaulted, he quickly fled and told the front desk, but claims no one took any action.

Equinox “had known for as much as 10 years prior that similar wrongful acts were occurring in its steam showers,” he alleges.

In an audio recording obtained by the Post, a manager told the man that sexual activity in steam rooms “is something that every gym in New York City, not just Equinox, has an issue with.”

G.B.’s lawyer said the gym failed to revoke the offenders’ memberships.

Equinox maintains it thoroughly investigates complaints and has a “zero tolerance policy for any inappropriate behavior in our clubs.”
