The 33rd edition of NewFest, New York’s annual LGBTQ film festival, has unveiled the full lineup for its first-ever hybrid event. The massive schedule features more than 130 new features and short films, along with retrospective screenings of some classics from the queer cinema canon.

The mix of virtual and in-person screenings will be held online and at venues around New York City, and the festival will run from October 15-26.

Some highlights from the program include the opening night film, which will be the East Coast premiere of the documentary Mayor Pete, about Transportation Sec. Pete Buttigieg’s historic campaign to be the first openly gay president of the United States. The festival will close out with Flee, which won the Grand Jury Prize at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Other highly anticipated screenings include Being Bebe: The Bebe Zahara Benet Documentary, Firebird, and Charles Busch’s latest, The Sixth Reel.

There will also be some special anniversary showings, including a 30th anniversary screening of the classic Madonna tour doc, Truth or Dare; a 10th anniversary screening of Pariah; and the world premiere of a 4K restoration of John Cameron Mitchell’s Shortbus in celebration of the film’s 15th anniversary.

“This year’s festival is all about connection,” NewFest executive director David Hatkoff told Variety on Wednesday (September 15). “The LGBTQ+ community thrives on connecting to one another and having spent most of the past 18 months apart, we are hungry for experiences that remind us we are a part of something bigger than ourselves. We believe queer film provides an opportunity to connect in a unique and celebratory way. This year‘s program highlights that everyone in our community has a story to tell, and shows just how meaningful it is when we really listen to, learn from, and spend time with each other.”

Virtual and in-person passes for NewFest are on sale now with individual tickets for screenings available this Friday (September 17).

I write about drag queens. Dolly Parton once ruffled my hair and said I was "just the cutest thing ever."
