Nicole Maines’s ordinary life contains some utterly extraordinary feats.

An actress and transgender activist, Maines first stepped into the spotlight in 2014 as the plaintiff in a successful Supreme Court battle that granted her the right to use the girl’s bathroom at school. She has since made a name for herself as a lead actress on the CW’s Supergirl, in which she played the heroine Dreamer, a.k.a. Nia Nal, from 2018–2021.

As if playing a superhero wasn’t epic enough, Maines broke ground with this role by portraying the first transgender hero in television history.

Supergirl ended its six-season run last fall, but Maines has kept plenty busy. She joined forces with the DC Comics team earlier this year to co-author an issue of Superman: Son of Kal-El, which saw Dreamer make her formal comic book debut.

As was recently confirmed in the DC Pride 2022 anthology, Maines will also be collaborating with nonbinary artist Rye Hickman to further Dreamer’s story in a forthcoming original graphic novel. It’s a project Maines tells Logo she is “most proud of” this Pride season.

“I knew that this was a character that needed to continue,” Maines gushes. “She meant so much to so many people, people who aren't even trans. I set up the first meeting with DC. I came to them, and I said, ‘Here's what I wanna do. Here's my idea.’ And now I'm the one writing it.”
