Nigeria's Anti-Gay Dictator Goodluck Jonathan Is Dunzo

President Goodluck Jonathan, who has seen Nigeria pass some of the world's worse anti-gay legislation, is all out of luck: In an election held Tuesday, he lost to opponent Muhammadu Buhari by more than two million votes.

It marks the first time in Nigeria's history that the opposition has defeating a ruling party in democratic elections.

Nigeria is considered one of the world's most corrupt nation. Jonathan became president in 2010 after the death of his predecessor Umaru Musa Yar'Adua.

"I personally call him the accidental president. It was chance," said writer Adewale Maja-Pearce. "He was plucked from obscurity because he was considered pliable."

Pliable, and still hateful: Last year Jonathan signed a gay-marriage ban that jails guests of same-sex unions for up to a decade. Officiants of such ceremonies face five years in jail, while couples themselves could face 14 years in prison.

Those who "promote" homosexuality—including LGBT rights activists—face ten years in prison, and even same-sex PDA can get you arrested.

Not surprisingly, the measure didn't factor into the recent election: Buhari and the opposition party, the All Progressives Congress, made Jonathan's inability to address corruption, poverty and incursions from Boko Harem in the north the focus of its  campaign.
