“Hairspray” Star Nikki Blonsky Comes Out as Gay

"Mama, I’m a Gay Girl Now!"

Good morning, Baltimore!

Nikki Blonsky, star of the 2007 movie musical Hairspray, has come out as gay. The actress posted a video to her TikTok showing her dancing to Diana Ross’ queer anthem “I’m Coming Out,” pointing to herself when Ms. Ross sings the classic chorus.

“Hi, it’s Nikki Blonsky from the movie I’m Gay! #pride #imcomingout #hairspray,” she captioned the video, which went out to her 27,000 followers.

In the comments, Blonsky said she was overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from fans. “It’s incredibly true!!!” she wrote. “Thank you so much for the love and support!”

In addition to Hairspray, the Long Island, New York native has appeared on Smash and ABC Family’s Huge. She also hosts her own Instagram Live talk-show, Nikki Nights.

Blonsky isn’t the first celebrity to come out via TikTok. Earlier this year, Moana breakout star Auli’i Cravalho also used the popular platform to seemingly come out as bisexual. (Cravalho’s TikTok is now unavailable.)

Congrats on coming out, Nikki! Somehow we think John Waters would approve.

I write about drag queens. Dolly Parton once ruffled my hair and said I was "just the cutest thing ever."
