Nintendo Says No-tendo To Gay Marriage In "Tomodachi Life"

Despite the efforts of a social media campaign to get Nintendo to change its mind, the mega game developer won't allow users to play as gay in the upcoming life simulator, Tomodachi Life.

Nintendo, in a statement to the AP, said it "never intended to make any form of social commentary" and that the "relationship options in the game represent a playful alternate world rather than a real-life simulation."

The Nintendo DS game populates a virtual island with Mii characters, personalized avatars that can do almost anything, including falling in love. That is, unless that Mii is gay. In that case, that virtual island starts to feel like actual Texas.

In response, Mesa, Arizona gaymer Tye Marini launched the Miiqaulity campaign. Marini, who is engaged in reality, objects to being denied his virtual equality.

"It's more of an issue for this game because the characters are supposed to be a representation of your real life," Marini told the AP. "You import your personalized characters into the game. You name them. You give them a personality. You give them a voice. They just can't fall in love if they're gay."

Nintendo has "heard and considered" the campaign and will "continue to think about the feedback." But in the meantime, gaymers will either have to get back in the pixelated closet or, you know, get a (real) life.
