A former Marine working in a New Jersey restaurant is accused of lying about a note from patrons that refused to tip her because she was a lesbian.

Last week, Dayna Morales, a server at Gallop Asian Bistro in Bridgewater, New Jersey, made national headlines when she produced a receipt bearing the explanation, "I'm sorry but I cannot tip because I don't agree with your lifestyle & how you live your life."

The story made national headlines and supporters sent more than $3,000 in donations, which Morales said she would donate to needy servicemembers.

But now NBC 4 reports that a Bridgewater couple has come forward to claim the check is theirs, but that they never wrote the note—and gave Morales an $18.

The unnamed couple also provided a Visa bill, which appears to indicate their card was charged $111.55, which would account for the $93.55 meal and a $18 gratuity. The husband explained that both he and his wife have worked in restaurants and always tip good servers. "We've never not left a tip when someone gave good service, and we would never leave a note like that," the wife said.

The husband also claimed he didn't vote for Gov. Chris Christie because the governor opposed same-sex marriage, adding "never would a message like that come from us."

Morales, meanwhile, stands by her story.
