An Oregon man who embarked on a cross-country walk to honor his late son, who committed suicide after anti-gay bullying, was himself fatally hit by a semi-truck on Wednesday night.
Joe Bell, of La Grande, Oregon, began on his “Walk for Change” after his 15-year-old son Jadin hung himself from school-playground equipment earlier this year. Friends and family said Jadin had been relentlessly attacked both personally and on the Internet because he was openly gay.
Joe Bell was walking on the shoulder of Highway 40 north of Kit Carson, Colorado, at about 5pm, when he was struck. Police believe the driver may have been asleep and have cited him for reckless driving resulting in a fatality.
A message was posted on the Faces for Change website:
We’re all shocked and saddened by the sudden and tragic loss of Joe Bell. Condolences have been pouring in from all over the US and Europe this morning. Joe’s mission was one of love that was bigger than he was (and bigger than any one organization). His purpose was – and always will be – to ensure that the choices faced by his son Jadin will never be visited upon another young person.
Our deepest condolences to the Bell family and their friends.
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie petitioned the courts to delay same-sex marriages in the Garden State until his administration’s legal appeal has been finalized, but today Judge Mary Jacobson denied that request.
Sorry ’bout it!
Jacobson had set October 21 as the day marriage equality would be legalized in New Jersey, but Christie is likely to appeal today’s ruling. You might want to order your tux now, just in case.
Remember the Duggar family—the clan with 45 kids and counting? Well, the anti-gay Family Research Council (FRC) is saying the entire Duggar family will participate in the group’s “Value Bus Tour” riding across Virginia to get the vote out for homophobic gubernatorial candidate Ken Cuccinelli for governor.
“We are excited to travel across Virginia and express our enthusiastic support for Ken Cuccinelli for governor and E.W. Jackson for lieutenant governor. Both of these men are deeply concerned about the issues impacting the family and our broader culture,” says Josh Duggar, the eldest of the reality-show family’s 19 brats—and the new executive director of FRC.
Y’know what’s against traditional values? Using your uterus like a luge.
The Harvey Milk Foundation has confirmed that the U.S. Post Office will release a stamp honoring slain LGBT leader Harvey Milk next year, calling the move an advancement for the gay community and Harvey’s message of hope:
“Breaking! It is official! The USPS will confirm this week that my uncle, Harvey Milk will be commemorated on a 2014 US postage stamp. Another first! My deep gratitude to everyone that supported this effort! More details including the image to come via USPS soon! “Hope Will Never Be Silent” and will be on millions of letters soon!”
Now if only anybody wrote letters anymore.
