North Carolina Brewery's "Don’t Be Mean to People" Beer Takes A Shot At HB2

"We just wanted to give people a good excuse to get involved in a new way," says Mystery Brewing Company's Erik Lars Myers.

Does North Carolina's odious Public Facilities Privacy & Security Act make you want to drink?

Well now you can sip a cold one and take a shot for equality at the same time: Mystery Brewing Company in Hillsborough, NC, is brewing "Don’t Be Mean to People" beer in protest of HB2.

The drink is touted as a "Golden Rule" saison, or pale ale, made with local malt and sorghum molasses.

“We wanted to do something in response, and making beer is what we do," says Erik Lars Myers, who launched the brew on Monday in collaboration with Ponysaurus Brewing Company in Durham. "We just wanted to give people a good excuse to get involved in a new way.

More than two dozen breweries and businesses have pledged labor or ingredients, and proceeds benefit both Equality NC and a summer camp for LGBT youth.

A crowdfunding campaign for the potent potable has received nearly $24,000 in donations (1,599% its initial $1,500 goal), but you can still contribute. Swag includes free beer (only in NC), t-shirts, glassware and a tour of the Mystery Brewing Company itself.
