North Carolina Just Took $500,000 Away From Disaster Relief To Spend On Defending "Bathroom Bill"

Priorities!

Making sure trans people can't use the bathroom is very important to Republican leaders in North Carolina. More important, apparently, than protecting residents from natural disasters.

Legislators reportedly took $500,000 from the state’s Emergency Response and Disaster Relief Fund and directed it to Governor Pat McCrory to be spent defending HB2, the state’s new anti-LGBT law.

“The governor asked for it," said Senate Budget Chairman Harry Brown (R-Onslow).

Passed in March, HB2 bans transgender people from using facilities that match their gender identity. It also blocks local municipalities from passing any LGBT protection laws.

The law is currently being "revised," though opponents say no revisions could make the measure acceptable.

The Senate passed a $22.34 billion budget measure earlier this week.
