NY School Drops Ban On Halloween Cross-Dressing After LGBT Group Protests

Kids at a school in Westchester County, New York, will be able to drag it up today for Halloween thanks to the efforts of a local LGBT group. Eastchester High School dropped its ban on cross-dressing after Empire State Pride Agenda contacted Principal Jeffrey A. Capuano.

School guidelines also forbid costumes that include swords, knives or axes, or those covering students' faces, but ESPA called on Capuano to reverse a rule stating "Students are not allowed to 'cross-dress.'"

"Policing one's gender expression has no place in our schools, especially on the one day of the year when some students may get to express themselves fully and freely without fear or repercussion," the group said in a statement.

The school complied with their request Thursday evening.

"Any student has the absolute right to cross-dress any day or days," said Superintendent Walter Moran, who added that the guidelines were intended to protect students—including gender-nonconforming ones. "In an effort to respect the race, religion and gender of our students, we believe that Halloween costumes should not make light of this."
