Florida Readies For Marriage Equality, Except For Clerks Who Refuse To Give Out Licenses: Today In Gay

After the Supreme Court declined to issue a stay on a case striking down Florida's same-sex-marriage ban last week, gay couples will be able to wed starting January 6. Assuming they can find someone to give them a marriage license

All four Tampa Bay county clerks say they will turn away any same-sex marriage applicants, as have clerks in Hillsborough, Pasco and Hernando counties. They claim the court's directive isn't clear, and say attorneys have advised them they could be arrested and charged with a misdemeanor if they give out licenses.

"We're sympathetic but we have to follow what we know is the direction of the court, based on advice from our legal counsel," said Pinellas County Clerk Ken Burke.

In Orlando, mayor Buddy Dyer will officiate a mass same-sex wedding at City Hall on January 6, though even he admits that's only if the Orange County Clerk's office grants the couples marriage licenses.

Up for consideration are cases from Michigan, Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee and Louisiana. The first four are all from the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals, which previous ruled Michigan's ban was legal.

The Louisiana case, Robicheaux v. George, has not been tried in the Court of Appeals yet

idaho gay marriageA federal judge has ruled that Idaho must pay more than $400,000 to the lawyers who successfully overturned the state’s ban on same-sex marriage in October.

The amount is actually about 10% than what was requested, but Gov. Butch Otter and his legal team still argued attorneys for the plaintiffs took too much time and charged too much in hourly fees.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Candy Dale disagreed, stating that the complexity of the case warranted extra time and fees.

Boxers, a popular gay sports bar in New York, is claiming several inflammatory tweets regarding the death of two New York City police officers were the results of hacking.

In response to Rev. Al Sharpton's tweet condemning the officers' killings, a tweet from Boxers' account read: "There is not a place in hell dark enough for you. You are the most disgusting human on this planet. Please may your fate find you."

Shortly thereafter, the same account went after New York mayor Bill de Blasio, who also condemned the murders. "How are you going to use your disgusting mouth into political gain using cops death," the tweet read. "Resign loser."

The tweets were eventually deleted, and Boxers sent out an apology, and claimed to be investigating how its social media could have been infiltrated.
