Man Brutally Gay-Bashed On Busy New York City Sidewalk As People Walk By

The man was pushed into a restaurant window, causing a deep gash on his head.

The NYPD is asking for the public's help in identifying a man who reportedly yelled anti-gay and racist slurs while attacking another man in broad daylight on West 4th Street over the weekend.

According to police, the 32-year-old victim was walking by Las Ramblas, a tapas bar between Jones and Cornelia Streets in the West Village, when the assailant approached him from behind yelling "faggot!" and the N-word.

Then, the assailant pushed the man into the restaurant window, causing a "deep gash" to the man's head before running off.

"It required a staple, so it was quite a big laceration," an NYPD spokesman confirmed to Gothamist.

The violent assault is just the latest in a stream of recent anti-gay hate crimes in New York City, which have been on the rise since 2012. In the last few months alone, gay men in New York City have been stabbed, had their noses broken, their legs broken, and been threatened by assailants who are, more often than not, never apprehended.

The suspect who attacked below, described as a 6-foot, 240-pound Hispanic man in his mid-20s, was last seen wearing a black T-shirt, black pants and black sneakers.

Since several bystanders can be seen in surveillance video below, the NYPD is asking anyone with any additional information to contact CrimeStoppers at (800) 577-TIPS.
