New York Pride March Will Air On Broadcast Television For The First Time

Smile, you're on TV!

For the first time in its 48-year history, the New York City LGBT Pride March will be televised.

The event, kicking off June 25 at noon down Fifth Avenue.

New York's ABC affiliate, WABC-TV, will broadcast the procssion on Channel 7 and stream the event on its website, ABC7ny.com.

“Channel 7 prides itself on being able to bring important, local celebrations of community spirit to as many people as possible,” said Dave Davis, President and General Manager of WABC-TV. “We look forward to making this year’s March the best ever.”

The march is one of the largest and best known LGBT events in the world, with some 350 marching contingents and more than 2 million spectators.

“We’re excited to have Tri-state viewers welcome us into their homes for what will be an unprecedented opportunity for the LGBT community's collective voices to be heard,” said Chris Frederick, NYC Pride Managing Director.

Other Pride Week events airing on Channel 7 include the Rally, a special Pride brunch, the annual PrideFest street fair and Pride Island, a new three-day music and culture fest featuring performances by Patti LaBelle, Tegan And Sara, Nelly Furtado and Years & Years.

This year’s theme, “We Are Proud,” speaks to the LGBT community’s unwavering ability to rise and be proud, even in the face of the existing political environment. Grand Marshals at the march include trans firefighter Brooke Guinan, GMHC's Krishna Stone, the ACLU, and Geng Le, a Chinese activist and founder of the dating app Blued.

“In the social and political turmoil brought by the current Administration, [these marshals] represent the components of what will ultimately be a successful resistance movement,” said Julian Sanjivan, NYC Pride March Director.

This year, Pride celebrations in D.C., L.A., and elsewhere are shifting focus onto resistance. New York Pride has always been political—billed a march, not a parade—and Pride week traditionally begins with a rally the weekend before.
