There are amazing Pride celebrations all over the world—and the Empire State Building has turned rainbow colors in June before. But there’s something special, in the wake of this week’s Supreme Court decisions, having one of the world’s most recognizable landmarks tips its cap to the LGBT community in the city where gay rights got their start.
The ESB Facebook page had this to say: “Tonight and through the weekend, our #lights will shine in rainbow colors with a sparkle in the halo in celebration of NYC Pride (The Official NYC LGBT Pride Organizer). #NYCPride #EmpireStateBuilding #NYC #LGBT”
Also pretty cool: Lady Gaga kicked off the annual Pride Rally on Pier 26, her first official appearance since undergoing hip surgery in February. “We are not a niche. We are part, a big giant part of humanity. It’s time for us to be mainstream,” she told the crowd, leading them in a chant of. “I demand the rights! To safe streets!”
Gaga ended her appearance with a rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” that swapped in the lyric, “Oh say, does our star-spangled flag of pride yet wave.” Damn, Cher, the gauntlet has been dropped.
