NYC Taxi Commission Sends Guidance to Drivers on Pronoun Usage

The “Inclusive Language Tips” document was emailed to more than 100,000 drivers.

The New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission sent out a guide on Wednesday to drivers regarding pronouns, in an attempt to educate on their importance and proper usage.

The "Inclusive Language Tips" document was emailed to more than 100,000 licensed drivers, according to CNN, and includes advice such as asking passengers what their pronouns are, not assuming pronouns based on appearance or name, and apologizing if a mistake is made.

It also calls out potential offenses, like referring to someone as "it" or "he-she," and encourages drivers to "use gender-neutral pronouns such as they or ze" if they are unsure of the individual's gender identity.

NYC's Taxi and Limousine Commission spokesperson Allan Fromberg told CNN the group regularly sends out guides to drivers in order to provide them with tips on a number of subjects. Recently, the commission has also sent out advice regarding how to handle passengers with service animals, as well as the issue of wheelchair accessibility.

The 'Inclusive Language Tips' email was not announcing a new policy or a rule—it was just a few informal, helpful tips about communicating with passengers," Fromberg said. "Just information to share—nothing deeper than that. I can't imagine a message of respect would be a bad thing."

The email originated from the commission's Office of Inclusion, formed last year to combat service refusals by taxis and other for-hire vehicles.
