OKCupid Acknowledges Polyamorous And Open Relationships With New Feature

"It seems that now people are more open to polyamory as a concept," said a rep for the site.

One of the world's biggest dating sites has added a new feature that acknowledges non-monogamous relationships.

OkCupid, which boasts 10 million monthly users, rolled out an upgrade this week that allows members to link their dating profiles to other profiles, letting visitors know they were already in a relationship.

"It seems that now people are more open to polyamory as a concept," Jimena Almendares, OkCupid’s chief product officer told The Atlantic.

Previously, couples would have to share one profile or explain their circumstances in their profile.

"As a user, when you land on that profile, you wouldn’t know what you’re seeing," said Almendares.

"Now, couples can identify themselves, and users searching for a non-monogamous relationship can find them more easily."

It's not clear if members can link to more than one other profile at a time.

OKCupid says 42% of its users would date someone who was already in an open relationship.

The company has made several recent updates to acknowledge broader identities and relationships: The same day the Supreme Court approved federal marriage equality in 2015, OKCupid launched Identity, which allows users to create custom genders and orientations.
