Why Olivia Colman Used a “Big, Wet Sponge” for “Favourite” Lesbian Sex Scene

"Emma Stone had to finger me," the actress explains.

Wow. Monét X Change is such a trendsetter.

Olivia Colman, who stars as Queen Anne in The Favourite, Yorgos Lanthimos' period drama, soaked up laughs on the latest episode of The Graham Norton Show, which airs Fridays on BBC America.

Colman has sex scenes in the new film with co-stars Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz, who play ruthless subordinates both vying for the queen’s affections. According to Colman, one of these intimate scenes made Stone particularly nervous.

"It was just all quite embarrassing," the 44-year-old British actress recalls. “So Emma Stone had to finger me, and in order to sort of avoid finding anything that you shouldn’t have found—because it’s sort of under the sheets like that..."

Colman says she solved the problem by asking the makeup department for a sponge to use as a "barrier" between her lady business and Stone's probing fingers. "So I put a sponge there," she explains. "It was a big, wet sponge."

"Her face was a picture," Colman continues, impersonating Stone's horrified reaction. "She was going up my leg and she went, 'Ugh!' I was like, 'It’s a sponge, it’s a sponge!'"

"I’m going to use a sponge for every character I play from now on,” jokes fellow guest Guy Pearce.
