Is it Christmas or Kwanzaa or Hanukkah? It sure feels like a holiday, because an Olly Murs song is finally available in America! Wheeee!
Ahem. In case you don't know him, Olly Murs is a British pop star who rose to fame on The X Factor. (That show has also delivered One Direction and Rebecca Ferguson, which means it's doing a lot more for us than the American version.)
Since leaving the television show, Murs has become a major artist, topping the British charts multiple times with his impish love songs. And I do mean "impish:" In every song, you can practically see Murs winking slyly while he sings about kissing on top of a funky beat. That attitude is why I enjoy his music: He seems confident, but not cocky. He clearly having a good time, but instead of getting wasted in a club, he's making droll little jokes at a soccer match.
That playfulness comes across in the new video for "Heart Skips a Beat," which is a spectacular slice of New Jack Swing. Take a listen below and watch the video here:
I mean, right? Murs is super cute, and when he plays soccer with all those ladies, he's a total scamp. I love a scamp! The lady is a scamp! Scamp stamp! Shrimp scampi!
Ahem. And let's not ignore the song itself, which is surprisingly melodic for a modern dance track. That makes it stand out in my current gym playlist, as does the super-awesome "skip-skip-skip" section in the chorus. So much fun!
(For those keeping score: The American version of "Heart Skips a Beat" features rappers Chiddy Bang, while Rizzle Kicks guested on the original. For me, Chiddy's verse is cleverer and more memorable.)
If I were taking bets, then I'd say this song will end up in my top ten for the entire year. And top ten status gives Murs even more boyfriend potential.
Previously: Ed Sheeran and Jon McLaughlin will also be your singing boyfriends.
