Olympic Ice Hockey Champion Meghan Duggan Marries Her Longtime Rival

Looks like love can be found on and off the ice.

Meghan Duggan and Gillian Apps prove that love conquers all.

Duggan, a 2018 Olympic ice hockey champion, married Apps this past weekend in Maine. Duggan and Apps have known each other for a long time, primarily as ice hockey rivals—Duggan plays for the U.S. and Apps played for Canada until 2015.

Duggan was the captain for Team USA at the Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang 2018, where she led her team to win a gold medal against Canada—the first time Team USA earned gold since the sport’s debut in the Games 20 years ago. And over the course of her career, Duggan has helped Team USA win two silver medals, seven world titles, and six Four Nations Cups. Meanwhile, Apps played for Team Canada at three Olympic Winter Games, retiring from the international team after Sochi 2014. It was there and in Vancouver 2010 that Apps played against Duggan.

This isn’t the first time that rival athletes found love. Former captains Julie Chu, a four-time Olympic medalist for Team USA, and Caroline Ouellette, a four-time Olympic medalist for Canada, announced the arrival of their first child last November.

Several American teammates joined in on Duggan’s celebratory weekend, with Olympic winners Kacey Bellamy, Brianna Decker, and Erika Lawler serving as bridesmaids.

Who says you can’t skate your way to love? No one now.
