We've got ourselves another champion athlete who happens to be gay: This time it's Amini Fonua, an Olympic swimmer who represented Tonga at the 2012 London Games.

While it's theoretically easier to come out in a solo sport like swimming, it's no picnic being openly gay at a conservative school like Texas A&M, where Fonua is a senior communications major: A recent student-government bill gave students the option of opting-out of funding the campus LGBT group.

But Fonua, who has been out since freshman year, took the Aggie code to heart: “An Aggie does not lie, cheat or steal,” Fonua said. “And if you’re living in the closet, you’re living a lie.”

Despite Texas A&M's reputation as being gay-unfriendly, Fonua says he's  felt supported by classmates and teammates. A former swim captain told Fonua to tell him if he experienced an harassment or homophobia.

“I think that sort of set the precedent for my journey here," Fonua said, "because everyone’s open-minded, people don’t judge, and at the end of the day if you’re good at what you do, anything else and everything else is secondary.”
