One In Two Black Gay Men Will Contract HIV, CDC Reports

A troubling new study from the Centers for Disease Control indicates that 50% of African-American gay and bisexual men will contract HIV in their lifetimes.

The report is the first CDC study to address HIV by race and ethnicity.

"Overall, the likelihood that an American will be diagnosed with HIV at any point during his or her life is now 1 in 99, an improvement from a previous study using 2004- 2005 data that reported lifetime risk at 1 in 78," the survey states. "Despite overall progress, this study reveals stark disparities by race, risk group and geography."

The same report indicates that the current risk for Hispanic men who have sex with men (MSM) is one in four and for white MSM it's one in eleven.

“These estimates are a sobering reminder that gay and bisexual men face an unacceptably high risk for HIV—and of the urgent need for action,” said Dr. Eugene McCray of the CDC’s Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention. "If we work to ensure that every American has access to the prevention tools we know work, we can avoid the outcomes projected in this study."

On average, one in six MSM will become HIV-positive, making them nearly 80% more at risk than heterosexual men.
