Watch RuPaul And Oprah Discuss The Spiritual Lessons Of “Drag Race”

"The real challenge is for them to be willing to die and become reborn."

Oprah Winfrey recently sat down with RuPaul for an epic kiki for O Magazine to talk about about “life, liberty and the pursuit of fabulous.”

Today, their entire interview is available for all you squirrel friends to read online, and not only that, but video clips have been released of the two queens talking about drag, their spiritual beliefs—and how the two actually overlap.

“It’s amazing. It’s often on your show you seem to be giving spiritual advice,” Oprah tells Ru in one of the clips.

“We set up the situation on this competition reality show where we challenged them [the contestants] to go beyond their own limited perception of themselves,” he explains, before Oprah interrupts him to add: “That is the greatest spiritual teaching there is.”

“The real challenge is for them to be willing to die and become reborn,” Ru says.

See? It’s never just about acting or sewing. The challenges on Drag Race are there to expand the queens’ perceptions of themselves.

Different clips of their conversation have been released on the OWN Super Soul Sunday YouTube channel, where you can see Oprah and Ru talk about Drag Race, and Ru’s different spiritual beliefs he has passed onto all of the queens who have competed on the show for the past decade.

While we don’t expect to bump into Oprah at a Drag Race viewing party in West Hollywood, it is fun to imagine her watching the series and being entranced by the eleganza of it all—just like us.

Oprah and Ru’s interview is available to read in print in the February issue of O Magazine, and will be available for download on Wednesday, January 17, in audio form on the hugely popular podcast, Oprah’s SuperSoul Conversations. Hopefully Ru will also show up on the next season of Super Soul Sunday when it returns this year on OWN.

Can we get an amen?

I write about drag queens. Dolly Parton once ruffled my hair and said I was "just the cutest thing ever."
