The body of a Dutch teenager who went missing after a Grindr date was discovered in a lake on Monday.
Orlando Boldewijn, a 17-year-old from Rotterdam, went to meet someone on February 17 but never returned home. His family and friends reported Boldewijn missing the next day, but due to a lack of surveillance cameras in the area, authorities had little to go on.
Just after midnight the night of his date, Boldewijn’s mother received a message from his phone, claiming he was on his way home. But it was overly formal, inconsistent with his typical texts, which were usually full of abbreviations.
Friends say he used Grindr often but always returned home afterward and never missed work or school.
“Orlando told his mother he was with me,” friend Noha den Hartog told Dutch News NL. “He often did that, but usually he always told me where he was. This time he didn’t.”
The body was discovered in a lake in the Ypenburg suburb of the Hague, close to where Boldewijn was last seen. A cause of death hasn’t been determined yet.
On Facebook, den Hartog wrote she hoped Boldewijn “didn’t experience any pain with your death.”
“I hope that you don’t blame yourself for anything,” she added. “You are such an incredible person, you fight so hard and you have so much love in your heart left to give. You have so much passion for yourself, for others and the world was not ready for your power. You are so missed. I love you so incredibly much and I know that you’re always going to stay with me.”
