Orlando Shooter Was Gay, Claim Ex-Wife And Former Classmates

"I was not out at the time, so I declined his offer,” said a classmate at the Indian River community college police academy.

Reports surfaced on Monday that the shooter in the attack on a gay Orlando nightclub had been to the club many times before, and even had a profile on the gay dating app Jack'd.

Now both Omar Mateen's ex-wife and his former police academy classmates are saying he was gay.

A classmate of Mateen’s at the Indian River Community College police academy told the Palm Beach Post that the 29-year-old once asked him out on a date.

“We went to a few gay bars with him, and I was not out at the time, so I declined his offer,” said the man, who asked for anonymity.

“He just wanted to fit in and no one liked him,” he said. “He was always socially awkward.”

The classmate assumed Mateen was closeted at the time.

Mateen's ex-wife, Sitora Yusufiy, spoke with Brazilian TV network SBT on Monday with her current husband.

Yusufiy described Mateen as having “gay tendencies” and said his father, Seddique Mateen, called him gay in front of her numerous times.

Seddique Mateen told reporters on Sunday that his son had been outraged at the sight of seeing two men kissing, but denied Omar was gay himself.

"If he was gay, why would he do something like this?” he asked the Post.

Numerous studies have indicated that people who are homophobic often harbor homosexual tendencies.
