Oscar De La Renta, Iconic Fashion Designer, Dies At 82

Oscar de la Renta, the iconic designer who dressed numerous Hollywood celebrities and First Ladies, died today at age 82 at his home in Connecticut, after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Born in the Dominican Republic in 1932, de la Renta went to Spain as a teenager and apprenticed for Balenciaga before taking a job with Lanvin in Paris and eventually landing in America and launching his own line in the 1960s. From 1993 to 2002, Oscar de la Renta designed the haute couture collection for Balmain.

White House wives Jacqueline Kennedy, Nancy Reagan and Hillary Clinton fall swore by him, as did A-listers like Sarah Jessica Parker, Jennifer Lawrence, Penelope Cruz and Amal Alamuddin, who wore a de la Renta wedding gown when she married George Clooney.

He had a bevy of awards on his mantle, including two Council of Fashion Designers Designer of the Year Awards, two COTY Awards (the American fashion world's answer to the Oscars) and a CFDA Lifetime Achievement Award.

In addition to fashion, he designed fragrances, homewares, furniture and  Tortuga Bay, a boutique hotel in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.

"The only realities in life are that you are born, and that you die," De la Renta said at the 2014 CFDA awards, acknowledging his cancer struggle. "We always think we are going to live forever. The dying aspect we will never accept. The one thing about having this kind of warning is how you appreciate every single day of life."

De la Renta is survived by his wife, Annette Engelhard, and a son, Moises.
