This Captivating Art Book Is a Love Letter to Queer New York

Curated by photographer-filmmaker LaQuann Dawson, "Our Light Through Darkness" benefits LGBTQ nonprofits.

A gorgeous new art book from curator LaQuann Dawson is honoring New York City's vibrant queer community, and directly benefitting LGBTQ-led nonprofits that serve it.

Created in collaboration with Impulse Group New York, Our Light Through Darkness is an anthology of evocative photos, illustrations, essays, and poetry by LGBTQ creatives. Featured works span seven themes: Bold, Family, Fluid, Kinky, Love, Positive, and Revolutionary.

Our Light Through Darkness is also Impulse Group's creative solution to meeting its fundraising goals for 2021. Instead of fundraising at its usual in-person event, the organization is asking for charitable donations to OurLightThroughDarkness.com. A minimum donation of $35 will score you a hard copy of the book, with all proceeds benefitting Destination Tomorrow and GLITS, Inc., Impulse Group's community partners. Books will ship next month.

Speaking to NewNowNext, Dawson describes the anthology as a "love letter" to queer NYC. "There is something so romantic about distance — about not being able to see the people you love in person, but to still think about them," he says. "To have images to share with them, things you want to tell them, and an urgent need to express your love and admiration. That’s what this book is, a response to love and to distance."

Given the "uncertainty, exhaustion, and isolation" of the COVID-19 pandemic, interconnectedness is more important than ever. "I pray that Our Light Through Darkness reaches you in good spirits," Dawson adds. "I hope you see yourself and know that you are loved, know that you are worthy of it. Know that we see you and we need you too. Realize how alive you are, how present, how fly, how beautiful, and how well."
