Maulik Pancholy is the latest out actor to beam aboard Star Trek: Discovery, CBS All Access’ upcoming addition to the venerated sci-fi franchise.
Pancholy, best known for his roles on 30 Rock andSanjay and Craig, will play Dr. Nambue, the chief medical officer aboard the Starship Shenzhou, the ship captained by Michelle Yeoh’s character.
EW reports The Following’s Sam Vartholomeos will play Ensign Connor, a junior Starfleet officer also assigned to the Shenzhou, while Terry Serpico (Army Wives) has been cast as Admiral Anderson, a high-ranking Starfleet official.
Anthony Rapp has already been announced as Star Trek’s first originally conceived gay character, Lt. Stamets, a scientist aboard the Discovery. (It’s unclear if Dr. Nambue will be gay, as well.)
Also starring Sonequa Martin-Green, Doug Jones, and James Frain (as Spock’s father, Sarek), Star Trek: Discovery is set before the original series.
The show was approved for 13 episodes but was recently rescheduled from a May premiere to some time this fall or early 2018.
