Columbus LGBT Magazine Shuts Down, Publisher Arrested

"Outlook Ohio" had been around for over 20 years.

An LGBT magazine published out of Columbus, Ohio appears to have ceased publication following the arrest of its editor-in-chief.

Outlook Ohio Magazine, which describes itself on Facebook as "a lifestyle and advocacy publication for the Ohio queer, allied and urban progressive community," has been running since 1996. But The Columbus Dispatch is reporting that no new issues of the magazine have been published since May, and no one is currently working at the publication's office.

Rumors about the fate of the magazine began to spread after the cancellation of Network Columbus' June event "Out With Our Elected Officials," which was hosted by Outlook.

Speculation continued after the July 3 arrest of publisher and editor-in-chief Christopher Hayes. The 44-year-old was arraigned "on two counts of possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, meth and oxycodone hydrochloride, and bond was set at $100,000," according to The Parkersburg News and Sentinel.

The Columbus Dispatch reported that Hayes is still in custody and could not be reached for comment, and said that Mike Moffo, the magazine's sales director, was "not at liberty to talk about" the arrest or the fate of the magazine.

Meanwhile, former associate publisher Chad Frye told the newspaper that although he wasn't able to confirm Outlook was officially finished, "it appears to have fizzled out."

Digitally, Jym Shipman has still been posting LGBT-themed comic strips to the Outlook Ohio site, but nothing new has been posted in the "News & Commentary" section since May 31.
