Pamela Anderson was the maid of honor at the wedding of PETA leader Dan Mathews and production designer Jack Ryan Thursday in Las Vegas. The Baywatch babe, 47, was joined by Pretenders singer and fellow animal lover Chrissie Hynde, who served as best man.
“We’ve been waiting for gay marriage to be legal in Las Vegas so that we could have as tacky a wedding as any straights,” said Mathews.
Together for six years, Mathews and Ryan said “I do” under the iconic “Fabulous Las Vegas” sign. (Casino chips were thrown instead of rice, which can hurt pigeons.)
After the ceremony, the grooms drove off to a vegan Thanksgiving dinner in a 1969 Firebird convertible draped with beer cans and plastic flowers.
At a recent tourism conference in London, experts complained European travel company aren’t doing enough to lure LGBT travelers, who spend some 50 million Euros, or about $62 billion, on vacations annually.
’No one is catering to us—and they should learn,” Carlos Kytka of the Gay European Tourism Association told Gay Star News. “My top piece of advice is so simple: get to know us. There is a lot of money there for the companies who go the extra mile – there is great word of mouth in our community.”
A GETA survey indicates 59% of LGBT travelers complain travel companies assume they’re heterosexual. And more than half of respondents said they spend over $6,000 a year on vacations.
Kytka says when it comes to addressing LGBT vacationers, “In Europe we are crawling, but in America they are running.”
Australian Senator David Leyonhjelm introduced legislation to legalize marriage equality Down Under. Ministers and officiants would be allowed to refuse to perform sam-sex ceremonies, however.
Leyonhjelm says he believes the government should get of the marriage business altogether—but since it hasn’t, gays and lesbians must not be excluded from it. To do so, he said, “is diminishing their liberty.”
Ugandan LGBT activist Kelly Mukwano is in intensive care after an attack by an anti-gay mob that left him with a badly injured eye and other serious injuries.
He’s faced threats and arrest before. “The police had begun torturing us when their chief walked in,” recalled of one encounter last year. “He recognized one of us and that’s how we escaped that day. We were lucky.”
Mukwano said he cannot leave the home he loves, “but I worry now that I cannot be a Ugandan, and a gay man, and survive.”
