A "kindness workshop" at a middle school near Pittsburgh that was intended to reduce bullying may have just added more fuel to the bullying fire, according to angry parents who are outraged by the personal questions their children were asked.

Eighth graders at West Allegheny Middle School were asked to reveal personal information in front of the rest of their classmates, including questions about their sexuality and if their parents have ever been to jail.

Lauralee Nuckels is a mother of one of the students, and listed some of the questions her daughter was asked.

"'Are you, or do you know anyone, that is gay, bisexual, transgender, or lesbian? Do either one of your parents have a drug or alcohol problem?'” Nuckels reported. “This is the one that throws me over the edge. 'Do you have financial issues at home? Do your parents ever worry about providing you with the essentials?'”

Students reported not wanting to go to school the next day due to the invasive nature of some of the questions, and parents fear the workshop is only going to make bullying worse.

"Now these kids who bully people on a regular basis just got a whole lot more information to do it with," Nuckels said.

The school district sent a letter to parents before the workshop, but they are saying it did not properly describe how personal the questions would be.

"West Allegheny Middle School conducted an interactive kindness workshop for eighth grade students that promoted peer acceptance to proactively address issues of bullying amongst students in school and on social media related to body image, race, religion, and sexual orientation," superintendent Jerri Lippert told Pittsburgh’s Action News 4.

"The intent of the workshop was to build a positive school culture and was not intended to offend any students."
