Rachel Maddow Sits Down With Parkland Survivors: "It's Time To Break The Pattern"

"We're going to keep fighting until we get what we want."

Three survivors of the deadly shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School, including out activist Emma González, spoke with Rachel Maddow about gaining ground on gun reform.

The students appeared on last night's episode of The Rachel Maddow Show ahead of this weekend's March For Our Lives on the capitol.

Since the shooting, which claimed the lives of 17 students and faculty, survivors from the Parkland, Florida, high school have galvanized people nationwide to fight for gun reform.

"We know how this is going to end up," González told Maddow. "We know that the politicians are going to say 'thoughts and prayers,' and that's not what we want to happen this time around. We want this to stop—it's time to break the pattern."

"Parkland is a community with an immense amount of togetherness," added survivor Jaclyn Corin. "We can also thank our education—we've grown up with amazing teachers [and] we've had the ability to use the voices they helped create to make change."

And their activism has been met with open ears: Since the incident, Florida politicians have passed state-level reform. A federal gun reform bill is also on the table—and Maddow says it could have "modest, but very real" effects on gun laws in America.

"We're really thankful for the baby steps we've seen," said fellow survivor Sarah Chadwick, "but it's honestly not enough. And we're going to keep fighting until we get what we want."

When asked how she's been coping with an onslaught of personal media backlash, González was frank: "It's not really hard to cope with," she said. "We don't really take it personally. At the end of the day, it's a stupid comment, and we shouldn't dignify it with a response."

Maddow thanked them for their time—and confessed she was "kind of starstruck."

"They're right here, I know!" she laughed.
