Michael Angelakos, the frontman of Passion Pit, revealed he was gay during an interview with author Bret Easton Ellis on Monday.

Speaking to Ellis, who is also openly gay, on his self-titled podcast, Angelakos opened up about his previous marriage to a woman, and how he struggled to come to terms with his true sexuality.

“I just wanted so badly to be straight because I love her [my ex-wife] so much," the singer said. "I think that was one of the most painful things when we decided to separate.”

Angelakos has been open about his struggle with bipolar disorder in the past, but said that it was not as easy to face his fears about his sexuality head-on.

“It’s always been about putting it off in my head," he shared, though admitting it was "not consciously.”
